Really don't have much to say about the product other than Western Digital is an excellent product. I purchased the hard drive for my PS3 and it works great. A great upgrade to my previous 80GB hard drive.

By J. Lapham (Sacramento, CA)
I received this product, installed it, started up my computer, and...nothing happened. Blue screen, message saying "no C/drive detected", or something like that. Tried it three times. Whether the drive itself was bad, or there was some software lacking, I don't know.I sent it back, ordered a drive from DriveSolutions (through Amazon), works perfectly.

Bought this to replace the hard drive in my PS3 (40gb) and it works flawlessly. The switch couldn't have been easier, and now i've got over 100gb of free space on my machine.

If you're going to replace your PS3 hard drive make note that you must format to FAT32.

 "high failure rate" 2009-01-09
By Mr. Anderson (Northern Virginia)
While I didn't purchase these drives from Amazon, I thought I would pass along my experience in the event it helps others make an informed decision. Our company recently performed a tech refresh on a little under 1000 computers. About half of the new computers have this Western Digital hard drive, the other half have a Seagate Barracuda 160 GB SATA drive. Within a month of the new computers being deployed, we are getting an average of 3 failed hard drives a week - all are the Western Digital 160 GB model # WD1600AAJS. The numbers seem too great to be the expected "infant mortality rate" for new hardware one might expect from +/- 500 new computers. All failures are being quickly replaced by the manufacturer since they are under warranty, but the amount of dead hard drives showing up on a regular basis has made me very wary of this model. BTW, no failed Seagate drives have been reported thus far.

 "Cool, Quiet and Reliable!" 2008-02-28
By T. Thompson
The biggest killer of hard drives is heat. If there is no air flow around the drive, the drive risks certain failure. That said, I have 2 of these running 24/7 in a home-theater PC in a raid-0 array. They are fast and quiet. They have been running continuously for over a year, and no hiccups. 160GB is small by today's standards, but the beauty of this design is that the drive is spinning just one single platter. If you were to go to the 320 GB or larger drive, then you will have multiple platters spinning inside the enclosure, resulting in higher heat and noise.

 "Replaced 3 in a year. . " 2008-02-07
By Oseph S. Vetrano, Jr. (Wall, NJ)
I had 3 die in the span of one calendar year. As a teacher, all I do is internet, word processing, Powerpoints and download a little music here & there. Yes, the hard drives were replaced by WD under warranty, but I spent $500 in PC repairs & data recovery in 2007. WD sends you a reconditioned hard drive and not a new one. I will never buy WD again and their QC department should be ashamed of themselves. I recommend Seagate.

 "Excellent Notebook Upgrade" 2009-06-16
By Steve E. Patton (Ohio)
I've had my Toshiba Satellite for two years. When the stock internal 80gb drive started having errors, I was in search for a new drive.

This drive replaced the Fujitsu made Toshiba 7200RPM 80GB drive. The biggest comparisons are the 4mb cache on the stock and the 16mb on the 160GB. Western Digital makes some high quality drives, and in a 24 hour stress test, this drive didn't falter once. I was able to install Ubuntu 9.04 in about 15 minutes next to the 25-30 it took the old drive. Excellent price for a double in disk space and probably nearly a doubling in read/write speeds.

One last note, my laptop hase a 3-cell Li-Ion battery. With the original hard drive the batter would last about an hour in normal usage. I'm already getting over an hour and a half. I'm guessing the stock hard drive ate a LOT more power.

One con, but it's normal.. This drive is just a little louder (if you put your ear to the drive bay) then the original. However, if it's on your table or lap, you'll never hear it. :)

"Excellent Drive! Laptop overheating? Trying Blowing out the dust..." 2009-08-10
By B. Falkenstein (San Diego, CA United States)
I just recently installed this 160GB Western Digital drive in my old Dell Inspiron 6000 and so far it is running fine (knock on wood...). The old Fujitsu 80GB drive worked well for 5 years, then failed on a hot day, but actually worked again later after cooling down, so luckily I was able to do a current backup of all my files. Even though the new drive is 5400 rpm and the old drive was 7200 rpm, the new drive actually made the computer run faster, so I guess spin speed doesn't necessarily translate to read/write speed when you're talking 5 years of technological advancement in between. The new drive is also much, much quieter, only emmitting an occcasional "tic" that is very quiet.

My old drive may actually still be OK and had just shut down automatically due to overheating (if it has this function), but it was already 5 years old and a bit on the small side, so it was a good excuse to upgrade. One thing I did which seemed to make a HUGE difference during the upgrade: I cleaned the dust out of the entire laptop with an air compressor. Not just one of those wimpy office duster cans, but an actual air compressor at 90 psi. A cloud of dust came out of the laptop, even though it appeared pretty clean from the outside, and now the fan runs much, MUCH slower than it had run in years, and the computer is generally cooler as well. I would actually venture to guess that this was the real cause of the drive failure. Of course this isn't going to solve the overheating problems of all laptops, but I'll bet most computer owners never blow out their laptops like this, but they really should, and frequently. From now on I'm going to do this regularly! Just a note that if you're going to blow out the dust with 90 psi, don't jam the blower nozzle right into the laptop or you might damage components with the strong pinpoint force of air. Hit it from at least several inches away or lower the pressure to, say 30 or 40 psi...

Some people were having problems with their Dell Inspiron 6000 not recognizing more than 128GB on this drive, but I didn't have this problem. I did upgrade the BIOS firmware and installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 so that might have helped. Another tip for Inspiron 6000 users: this laptop has a crappy cooling system design and vents on the bottom left, so if you like to actually have the laptop in your lap (like me) you should buy a hard placemat and put the laptop on the mat. I know, this kind of sucks, but not only does it unblock the vent but it also insulates the laptop from heat from your legs. The hotter your machine runs, the shorter its life will be.

 "Excellent ATA Drive!" 2009-08-05
By J. Laberee (Plano, TX)
BIG ATA drives are getting harder to find so when I found this 320mb 'Bad Boy', I was pleasantly surprised. I upgraded from a 160mb drive, which was always banging on FULL and I could not be happier with my purchase. Just as advertised - it is fast, quiet, & cool, so the extra space I was looking for is no longer an issue for me. This drive is an awesome value and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for additional 2.5" ATA digital real estate.

"Little HD that works just fine on Toshiba P35 laptop" 2009-07-29
By S. JOHNSON (California)
After getting a Toshiba Satellite P35 for free. I went about fixing it's known issues. Then I tackled the speed with more RAM and a bigger faster HD. The original HD was 100GB 4200RPM. By going to a 250GB 5400RPM I actually significantly increase the R/W speeds of the laptop. The increased rotation rate is nice but hardly the cause for the biggest gain. Because each HD had the same number of platters the distance to search for a file on the new HD is about 2.5 times less distance than the original. That, the 8MB, and the increased RPM's make this HD over 2X's faster than the old one. =) Making old slow computers run fast again... Just so long as you stay away from Vista that is. Actually if you want to see some real speed load Umbuntu and it's virus free to boot. I do all my web surfing and banking on a locked down Umbuntu machine and I have never felt safer.

Fun Fact: Here is our Government at work. Windows 7 comes on Oct 22 09 and the army has just decided to convert everything to Vista - which has major problems. This of course means the army will purchasing new computers to run the bloated OS. Of course their is no guarantee that Windows 7 will not have issues but the 2nd OS in a series for MS is usualy better.

Windows 95 Sucks

Windows 98 OK

Windows ME Sucks

Windows XP OK

Windows Vista Sucks

Windows 7 ?

Save yourself the headache and learn about Umbuntu.

 "WD 160GB Hard Drive" 2009-08-12

This hard drive was perfect for my situation. My Dell's hard drive decided to fail on me and I couldn't get it working again, so I bought this. Installation was easy, I was able to reinstall Windows in no time.

It was also a great deal; the 80GB hard drive from Dell, which I originally had, was around $100, so this was worth it; twice the space for half the price.

Any way, I use it for for Backup and Storage with a
