The WD hard drive doesn't fit quite right in the case, which is very flimsy and cheap. The zipper keeps opening up by itself. I don't know if it's broken or the drive is just too big for the case, but I will use it until it falls apart, and never buy this brand again.

I bought several of these to store my external drives. I have several different brands besides Western Digital. It holds the Western Digital perfectly without straining the zipper. It also holds the Maxtor drive ok as well. Simple Techs are a harder fit and strain the zipper. Also, the handle attached to the zipper broke. Not a biggy because there's always the cariber clip. Overall...it does what it's supposed to. It protects them.

i bought this at a college bookstore discount less than a year ago. it was working fine for the most part, although every once in a while (after about 4-5 months) it would make a loud, ugly noise that sounded like something was scraping around on the inside. i should have replaced it then, but nothing seemed to have been damaged or lost and i didn't have the money.



all of a sudden, today it dies. it turns on but won't show up in finder. files are all gone, some of them irreplaceably. suddenly i have no options for backing up my computer, which i having a few problems of its own. looking for the warranty right now, hopefully they'll just refund me the money instead of sending a new unit.



it's not worth the trouble! get something else. i've heard good things about the seagate freeagent products, so i might look at those next.

I have a 500gig Essential that died after 15 months. I had no idea when I bought it that this only has a one year warranty. I've never heard of ANY harddrive with less than three years. With only one year, this is absolutely not worth the money. I've bought a number of Western Digital drives and have found them to be less and less reliable. As it turns out, this will be my last!!

I purchased this item for my WD320 portable hard drive. I thought i would like it because it came in a variety of colors and it was show as the item to use for my portable hard drive. The zipper failed to zip properly so I could not secure my drive in the case. After doing substantial research I decided to purchase this hard drive, and I'm glad I did! I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on my imac and wanted something that had firewire 400 so i wouldn't take up one of my usb ports. I backed up 200gb to the my passport, and it took about 3 hours. I like the fact this hard drive is powered through the firewire cable and don't have to connect it to a AC outlet. I couldn't be happier.

I'm a digital artist responsible for photography, high definition motion graphics and overall general graphic design, print and web. I got my passport for Christmas this year and I couldn't be happier.



Firstly, My main machine is a MacBook Pro laptop. My work computer is a Mac Pro and 99% of the computers I work on in my industry are Macs. So this review is from a Mac Users perspective. Windows users beware (apparently this drive will require a reformat.)



I had read a bunch of reviews talking about the difficulty of the short thick fw800 cable and I have got to say they're unfounded. Sure it's thick, no lie there. But it's completely manageable. The package also comes with a USB cable and a FW400 cable for ultimate compatibility (which is Ideal for a freelancer who is constantly working on many types of machines.) And the best of all IT DOESN'T REQUIRE A POWER SUPPLY!!!



For what it's worth i found the drive to be physically appealing and very small & light weight. Compared to a GTECH 500GB GDrive. It comes with a pretty slick carrying bag (to hold the extra cables as well as the drive.)



The drive comes with about 280~ mb of drivers and Documentation in every possible language on it (install-delete imo) After that i did some basic workhorse transfers on them. I moved my entire 36 gig Aperture Library and my 45 gig iTunes library on the drive and it was finished by the time i went in to check on the progress the first time. I was planning on checking on it at least 3 or 4 times. That was a nice surprise.



All in all this drive deserves 5 Stars easily. What this drive doesn't deliver in affordability It easily makes it up in literally every other aspect of it. (I wouldn't knock off a star off any other FAT formatted external for having to reformat it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so i don't think the previous 4 star rating was deserved.)



Now, because i hate reading reviews that are all praises and no criticism and as much as i hate to try and find anything wrong with this product I guess i would say they default "turbo" icon after installed those drivers is pretty ugly and something i changes immediately.

I strongly dislike this product. I have used WD drives before without issue, so I didn't think twice before buying this one. I was enticed by the thought of accessing my data through a browser from anywhere in the world. DO NOT BE FOOLED. My drive continuously gets dropped or changes letter assignment, which makes backing up a nightmare. I tried using the WD Backup software but as I stupidly threw out the quick install guide, I am unable to get a product key. I refuse to put more money into this piece of junk. WHY would the company put a registration key on a quick install guide? How about a sticker on the disc? Ridiculous. I used it for the 30 day trial and have been struggling with it ever since. I wouldn't recomment this drive on my worst enemy. Save your money!

I set the drive up to run as RAID 1 (mirroring) so if one drive dies, I still have another with my data safe. It was slow transferring data to the drive; a good task to run overnight. It's also noisy, so park where it won't be too annoying. It's been a little more than a year now, warranty expired, and I could no longer access the drive! If I power it down and up, I can see the management page or access a share for about 30 seconds before it essentially shuts itself down. What does WD tech support say? You lost a drive so now you have to replace the unit! What good is RAID 1 if you can't even access the one good drive?! And what about my data?! Not recommended.

While I'm still a fan of Western Digital products, this one was discontinued for a reason. If you start trying to copy files from another drive, it eventually quits and has to be reset. I was not happy that it took a day with tech support in India before I got to a tech support guy in California who informed me that I needed the newer model. Amazon was great though to take back my product and refund my money.
