 "Trouble Free Connect" 2009-07-03
By Gene Goodhue (Grand Rapids,MI)
Isn't it nice to plug something into your PC and watch it set itself up without searching for drivers, or having to unplug it to make your mouse work again? This unit works great with XP, zero installation problems and works fast as advertised! High recommendation from me.

 "Easy installation, great support!" 2009-06-18
By David R. Baldinger (Reading, PA USA)
I am impressed with this drive's build - it's solid and appears to be a very nice product.

Installation on WinXP didn't go as smoothly as expected but this had nothing to do with the drive. On installation the wizard repeatedly gave me an error message: "There was a problem installing this hardware. An error occurred during the installation of the device. One of the filter drivers installed for this device is invalid."

I sent an e-mail to Western Digital support and they replied in less than three hours with a link to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that indicated a corrupt registry entry. After editing the specified area of the registry the drive installed with no problems. I was impressed with WD's speedy response and correct diagnosis of the problem!

The FAT32 formatting was not an issue; I used the NTFS quick format and re-formatted the drive in less than 30 seconds.

The 7200 RPM drive motor makes for quick transfers, much quicker than my old Seagate 5200 RPM external drive.

Since this drive will be used mainly for backups and will not see frequent use, I am also pleased with the automatic spin-down feature that puts the drive to sleep when not in use. After spin-down the drive spins up immediately when accessed with no discernible delay.

The only negative I have about this drive is having the access light on the back where it is not visible during normal use. This is only a minor issue, however, and overall I am very pleased with this drive.

What displeases me greatly is Amazon's new pricing policy. When I ordered the drive the price was $99.99. There was a delay in shipment because the drive was temporarily out of stock; when the drive was re-posted the price had been reduced to $88.00. When I contacted them, Amazon adamantly refused to charge the price when shipped from new stock and billed me for the full $99.99. As a consequence, other vendors will be receiving my business in the future and I will not be purchasing from Amazon again.

Nice Product. Works Well. Good Price. I purchased this product after reading other reviews. It is a heavier, sturdier product than many others. Not one that I would consider portable, due to the weight. But, it is exactly what I was looking for.

"WD Caviar Blue 500 GB HDD" 2009-07-29
By jcvox93 (Long Island, New York, USA)
Great drive, came in great packaging and in an anti static bag to keep it safe. Drive performance over all is pretty good, it doesnt run that hot, but it will get hot with restricted airflow so make sure your case has nice airflow. I get a peak of 150 MB/s read on this drive, with the average around 120 MB/s. Power on hours is about 600, so this drive is pretty new but the SMART status shows good numbers so far. This looks like a very reliable drive, better then some Seagates that ive used in the past. I would recommend this drive, its got great performance and a great price point.

"Just received in great packaging" 2009-07-25
By Arvin (USA)
Just got this in the mail. Lickety split as well. I was pleasantly suprised, after reading other reviews, that it came packaged quite securely in a pair of shock-absorbing endcaps. But as others have mentioned, this OEM drive comes with nothing! Nothing! The drive and that's it. I am ok with it, I know what is what, but its something to be sure to be aware of. Looking forward to getting it up and running soon. Will update with performance in the future.

"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" 2009-07-15
By John Morelli
First, I will start with the Bad, so that the Good and the Ugly will have the necessary background. The Bad is that within a few months, this hard drive failed. I used the WD utility to check it and the utility could not complete and report. I am no expert, but I think the controller on this drive was bad.

The Good, is that WD replaced the drive with the only cost to me the postage of returning the bad drive (although I could argue that they should have sent a postage paid return container, I find their approach acceptable). There was little wait time on the technical support line (<5 min) and there was little hassle in requesting an RMA#. The most difficult part of the return was determining whether to use their normal return, where I send the bad drive back first, or their advanced return, where they take my credit card number, send out a drive and I send the bad drive back within 30 days to ensure my credit card is not charged. I went with the advanced return to get the working drive quicker. The process was flawless.

The Ugly is that while I backed up my most important data and did not lose any of these files, I still lost about 250Mb of data that while not important, I would really rather not lose. In general, I count on a drive lasting at least three years. After that, I get really fanatical about backing up everything. By then, that capacity drive is dirt cheap and buying a duplicate/replacement is easily affordable. Sure, accidents can happen anytime, so I back everything up that is important all the time, but to have a drive last just a few months seems a little ridiculus.

WD was my manufacturer of choice for several years. I think their tech support is outstanding; however, this is the second WD drive I have had that had problems resulting in the loss of data. I am going to be looking a little more critically at my next purchases before I dive into another WD drive.

"Beware: sudden failure after 2 months" 2009-07-10
By Nungesser (The USA)
Like other people here, I had no trouble at all with my WD hard drive until one morning it suddenly, unexpectedly died. A steady clicking sound meant drive head failure -- mechanical trouble that, in two seconds, wiped out 500GB of data.

Buy all the cheap WD hard drives you want, but make sure everything on them is backed up!

I would have given it 5 stars had it included a cable. But otherwise, good price and a solid product. Plus Amazon got it here fast.

"Great Product, Terrible packaging by Amazon" 2009-07-24
By music_fan75
This is a great hard drive, with good speeds, size, noise and heat. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for some great storage. I actually used it to replace the system drive in my Mac G5, and it's great!

However I returned the drive shipped to me by Amazon because of the poor packaging, and spent an extra $20 to buy it a BestBuy so it would be in retail packaging. The extra money was worth it to me to ensure that it wasn't beat up in shipping. Amazon needs to change their shipping habits of sensitive items like hard drives and camera lenses to name a few.

**Buy this OEM Bulk hard drive from Amazon with caution!!**

Good luck!

 "Great drive, bad shipping..." 2009-07-23
By J. McKee (Bloomfield, NJ United States)
I ordered this drive next day air cause I needed this for a friends setup (last minute request). Anyway, I received the drive late due to UPS shipping issues and honestly I was amazed the drive still works. It was shipped in a tiny box with only padding on the top the drive (so it can still move around the box). I tested the drive for a few hours and luckily everything passed.

I will give the product 5 stars, but the shipping 0 stars...sorry Amazon.

 "Nice Drive" 2009-07-22
By James Lairmore (Colorado)
Poor Packing only one bubble wrap in a small box but arrived ok. This is a bare bones drive with no instructions. You need to install into computer, then confirm it shows up in the bios, and in the device manager under disk drives. Then go to computer management and then select disks. You must initialize by right clicking and then assign a drive letter and format (create a simple volume -- this is a right click also while on the drive in the list) the format takes a long time on a large drive (about 3 hours) I did not try the quick format as I was not in a hurry. Works great.

I would recommend slicing it into 3 partitions. If fragmented the Terabyte can become unstable. Otherwise it works perfect. Buy this , if upgrading or installing it in a new machine - perfect for mass storage . Its a plus that it is SATA - quite fast

 "packed without protection, DOD" 2009-07-20
By EH (Miami, Florida United States)
Extremely disappointed, the drive was shipped without and protection and arrived dead, it was packed loose in a oversize box.. When I opened the box I immediately wondered if it would still work..

You can check my history, I am not a complainer and accept this as a total loss. Not even worth my time to send it back.

I did feel that the shipper was negligent and took my time to write this review to warn other to take my loss in consideration when buying from a irresponsible seller

Eric
