 "Terrible drive" 2009-07-28
By DipKnight (Durham, NC)
I bought two of these. After a year and a half of operation, one is dead, and the other is clearly dying, as more and more bad sectors are cropping up. One failure I could write off as a fluke. But two - plus all the other lousy reviews here - convince me that this is just a flimsy product. Save yourself the trouble and buy something more robust.

The first one I had failed before I could even transfer much to it. I got the replacement, but it is the slowest writing of six external drives that I have. It is agonizingly slow, slow, slow. I'd never buy one again.

By C. Swike (NY)
i bought this at a college bookstore discount less than a year ago. it was working fine for the most part, although every once in a while (after about 4-5 months) it would make a loud, ugly noise that sounded like something was scraping around on the inside. i should have replaced it then, but nothing seemed to have been damaged or lost and i didn't have the money.

all of a sudden, today it dies. it turns on but won't show up in finder. files are all gone, some of them irreplaceably. suddenly i have no options for backing up my computer, which i having a few problems of its own. looking for the warranty right now, hopefully they'll just refund me the money instead of sending a new unit.

it's not worth the trouble! get something else. i've heard good things about the seagate freeagent products, so i might look at those next.

 "One Year Warranty!!!" 2008-08-05
By GaryL (Crestwood, KY United States)
I have a 500gig Essential that died after 15 months. I had no idea when I bought it that this only has a one year warranty. I've never heard of ANY harddrive with less than three years. With only one year, this is absolutely not worth the money. I've bought a number of Western Digital drives and have found them to be less and less reliable. As it turns out, this will be my last!!

 "Buyer Beware!" 2009-05-31
By QuietOxonian (Oxford, England)
I strongly dislike this product. I have used WD drives before without issue, so I didn't think twice before buying this one. I was enticed by the thought of accessing my data through a browser from anywhere in the world. DO NOT BE FOOLED. My drive continuously gets dropped or changes letter assignment, which makes backing up a nightmare. I tried using the WD Backup software but as I stupidly threw out the quick install guide, I am unable to get a product key. I refuse to put more money into this piece of junk. WHY would the company put a registration key on a quick install guide? How about a sticker on the disc? Ridiculous. I used it for the 30 day trial and have been struggling with it ever since. I wouldn't recomment this drive on my worst enemy. Save your money!

 "Slow, now dead" 2009-05-09
By C. Reynolds
I set the drive up to run as RAID 1 (mirroring) so if one drive dies, I still have another with my data safe. It was slow transferring data to the drive; a good task to run overnight. It's also noisy, so park where it won't be too annoying. It's been a little more than a year now, warranty expired, and I could no longer access the drive! If I power it down and up, I can see the management page or access a share for about 30 seconds before it essentially shuts itself down. What does WD tech support say? You lost a drive so now you have to replace the unit! What good is RAID 1 if you can't even access the one good drive?! And what about my data?! Not recommended.

 "Don't Buy This Model !" 2009-04-11
By David Pierce (Memphis, Tn. USA)
While I'm still a fan of Western Digital products, this one was discontinued for a reason. If you start trying to copy files from another drive, it eventually quits and has to be reset. I was not happy that it took a day with tech support in India before I got to a tech support guy in California who informed me that I needed the newer model. Amazon was great though to take back my product and refund my money.

"WESTERN DIGITAL = LOSE YOUR DATA" 2009-09-18
By David C. Cobb (Los Angeles, CA)
I bought two of these in mid-2007 and less than a year later, found many of the same problems reported all over Amazon and other review sites -- overheating, powering down with no warning (even in the middle of data transfers!), intermittent unmountability. They were used in an average home office with typical usage, with plenty of air circulation to keep cool -- but they routinely glitched, crashed, and became useless not only for daily data use, but even occasional backups.

I ended up buying two new WD Elements drives to replace them, and managed to transfer all the data to the new drives. Those seemed to work great, and they were reasonably priced, so I bought two more Elements drives for additional project archives and music/photo media. Meanwhile, while all four of those were in use, one of the MyBooks completely died and wouldn't mount (after sitting unused for months, mind you), and the second became so glitchy it was pretty much unusable.

But then something downright infuriating happened. ALL FOUR of the new replacement WD Elements drives ended up having problems, too! The power supplies on ALL FOUR of them died within weeks of each other, right after the one-year warranty expired. And get this -- WD wanted to charge me twenty dollars per power supply for replacements (not including shipping!).

Thankfully, it's just the power supplies that are faulty -- the actual drives still work, and my data is still on them, so I bought *one* new power supply, and am now transferring each of those drives to a new Drobo with four 1.5tb Seagate drives inside. After they're transfered, I will wipe them clean, crack open all of the cases, and maybe try to salvage the internal drive units with other aftermarket cases. Ironically, it seems in all of the reviews I've read elsewhere, WD's basic internal drive products are fine -- it's the external cases they make that have problems.

THE BOTTOM LINE: SIX WESTERN DIGITAL DRIVES BECAME UNSTABLE AND UNUSABLE, ALL WITHIN A YEAR OF PURCHASE.

SIX drives, folks. Not just one or two. Over six-hundred dollars spent on totally, completely unreliable products in just about two years. I've heard that second wave of re-engineered MyBooks currently on the market are a much better product -- but I'll never be buying WD drives ever again after this experience. Not only should Western Digital completely get out of the external USB hard-drive business, they should have a class-action lawsuit brought against them.

"Worthless drive----when in the case." 2009-08-15
By Delany Allen (St. Louis, MO)
I've had my drive for two years, always has worked great. I even tote it around the country so I'll have my file system with me. About a month ago the drive suddenly stopped connecting via USB. The drive appeared, but all folders were empty. By coaxing the drive... or voodoo magic... quite frankly just jostling the usb cord in the casing, I managed to get the files off, though they would occasionally reappear as good as new. The files are still there, I know, but half the time inaccessible, and eventually the drive stopped being recognized altogether.

Now I am going to try taking the drive out of the casing (who cares now about warranty, since it only lasts ONE YEAR) and mounting it, which I have heard is very successful for other users who want to recycle a dead MyBook (a common occurance?--mounting the drive internally may circumvent some of the known problems with the USB and Firewire control board copping out. My feeling is that the files are still on the drive, still intact, but the casements which are extremely poorly made and fail.

Western Digital should stick to internal drives until they can learn how to make a lasting USB product with a SATA drive ---- I have a WD Passport that still works brilliantly, so I have a feeling these myBook casings are the real culprit. Which is hilarious, because the drives have a 3-5 year warranty if they are NOT in a case provided by WD, but when you buy the package altogether the warranty is mysteriously reduced to a year. Avoid myBook at all costs if your data is important to you... which we must assume it is, since these are made as backup systems. Hah.

To those who still have this drive (and gave a five star review).... please just make sure you are saving your data somewhere in addition to your myBook, or you may be coming back here and editing your opinion in a few months or a year!! To those who have not had the misfortune (idiocy?) of paying premium for junk, seek other brands, Western Digital has no pity for your file losses and will merely refer you to data recovery systems raking in $[...] a pop... which actually sounds a bit like fraud, to me, but I digress.

After a year of use, My Book Premium failed to complete backups. It failed to be reformatted, it failed the diagnostics program which came with the drive. Western Digital support failed to give useful advice. I would never buy another WD product, and in fact just purchased a one TB drive from Seagate for $149 - the purchased of which was based on the extended warranty the company offers and ratings I found on line.

"Terrible. 2 models have died on me." 2009-07-10
By Kenn Brodhagen (Roswell, GA USA)
I have had a terrible experience with this Western Digital My Book. The original failed approximately 3 months after I got it. I called Western Digital and had them RMA me a new one. I really had to push hard to get them to cover the shipping on it. They wanted me to pay to send the faulty one back. I asked to speak with a supervisor and he quickly arranged a UPS preprinted label to be emailed to me.

The replacement model has now failed in a similar manner approximately 1 year after I got it. I'm not going to bother trying a third.

"WD Customer Service Is Aweful!" 2009-06-15
By Matthew Hardaway (Saint Louis, Missouri)
Proprietary software is unreliable, and useless more often than not.

Unit stopped turning on, product under warranty, WD customer service only willing to send out power supplies that do not solve the problem. WD not willing to send new enclosure or to recover lost data. They reccommend an "authorized" data recovery center that is charging $300-$400 for data recovery.

I can buy a $50 enclosure and recover the data myself.

This is the last WD product I will buy. Save yourself the hassle!

 "Pros and Mostly Cons" 2009-04-25
By Elias G. Souaya (Washington DC)
I have had several experiences with Western Digital Network Accessed Storage devices (NAS). The one excellent thing about Western Digital is the ease with which you can get Phone Support.

This does NOT compensate for a VERY poorly organised KnowledgeBase, or for the accompanying manual which seems only interested in getting you to register with Mio Net, a web access service. This seems to be the only thing they are thinking about. Go ahead, de-install Mio Net or it will not stop bugging you to register. De-installing it will not affect the NAS. WHEN it works (which is not often) the device practically installs and configures itself, and works great, but this is a gamble.

Tech support technicians are mostly OK, but not the weekend crew.

Please do yourself a favor and don't buy this piece of junk. It would not let you install the software without internet connection. It would not even work without internet connection even if you are trying to connect it from a computer from the local area network. Not only that, it make my internet connection very unstable. I had to write this review the second time because I still have this hard drive connected to my network. I am removing the data currently to return it. It is very very very slow. Don't trust the advertise 500MB/s it is like .005MB/s . I think they put the zeros on the wrong side of the 5. Just kidding, I think it is like 2MB/s. Still imagine trying to transfer 500GB with that speed. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE.

By Rajesh Mahajan
I bought this product y'day and was very excited to install. Installation went very well and backup software (WD backup) got installed and ran to backup my whole system. It kept working for more than 5 hours to backup my 90G data. I let it run for the night. Today morning, I see that my PC became very slow as if the backup software completely took over the machine. I rebooted the machine and since then, my PC locks up after few mins. I removed the WD backup software, disconnect the drive, unfortunately it has left some bad taste there. I no longer can work on my PC. It just locks up after few mins of restart.

"Lemon Out-of-the-Box / WD will not Service!!!" 2009-06-12
By Tim Deruwebh (WeHo, NYC, & Stuart, FL)
I chose the WD My Book Pro 500 GB - identical to the 320 GB but larger capacity - because of its compatibility Mac OS X. I partitioned the drive 3 ways: one to use as an emergency Boot drive on Mac OS X 10.4.11 (I was having issues with OS X 10.5.5 stability on y root internal drive). I was NEVER able to use the WD as a Boot Drive. Strike 1.

Almost immediately, my Mac would only detect the external drive app. one in ten times. I was told to juggle the interface cords by WD - and that worked, intermittently, until it didn't work any longer. Strike 2.

Western Digital was extremely uninterested. Recover the data using an outside vendor - at a cost, I am appalled to say, of upwards of $1700.00. Then WD would be happy to replace my erased defective out-of-the-box drive with a comparable one.

I brought the drive to a local data recovery shop, hoping to save some money. The problem they told me was a systemic design flaw. $1700.00. Strike 3.

I am totally and permanent;y disabled with a prognosis of 5 years. That is in addition to the 5 years of digital and multimedia footage I had stored on the My Book Pro.

Western Digital further informed me that their external hard drives, when used as directed, are susceptible to data recovery failures for which they are not liable. Strike 4.

I did extensive research when choosing this WD external drive. No where did WD point out data loss was an expectable outcome of proper usage of their defective devices. Strike 5.

I am looking into litigation.

DO NOT BUY A DRIVE FROM WESTERN DIGITAL!!!.

PLEASE CALL WESTERN DIGITAL AND LET THEM KNOW YOU THINK THEY SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS!!!

 "Western Digital HD" 2009-03-03
By Fred K. Rose (Albq. New Mexico)
I have had this unit several months now and I am very happy with the unit. I know that this unit is now out of production so you would have to find a similar WD unit, I wanted a external HD that would last me several years years as I do not upgrade CPU every time a new one comes out. That is why I wanted one that had USB, and both 400 and 800 firewire interfaces.

I would recommend any of Western Digital Hard drives to anyone looking for external or for that matter internal drives. I am a buyer for a university bookstore and have found Western Digital to be very reliable. We have not had to sent one unit back as being defective. I cannot tell you how many have purchased in the various My Book Series of HD's.

By David Mintz (Hollywood, CA)
This was easy to setup and use. It comes with a 1yr warrenty and flat out died just after the warrenty expired... The company (WD) was extremely unhelpfull and insisted the product was outside of warrenty and the only way to recover my data is to pay a lot of money to an external data recovery center. You want your data safe, and this HD is NOT safe or secure. I just bought a replacement from Seagate, and while I can't say anything about how long it will work for, they are known to be reliable and that is what you want with a HD. DO NOT BUY WESTERN DIGITAL if you value your files...
