I waited until I had this drive for more than a year to write a review. I have, or should say had, 3 external hard drives. I can say in good conscious this is the best one of the group. Here is my capsule summary.



* It's been flawless for more than a year.

* It is reasonably fast for a portable hard drive powered by a USB connection.

* I love the fact that it's light, durable, and I don't need a power supply.

* I also like the black, sleek design.

* It's been reliable. After all, what good is an unreliable backup?



One step everyone should take when disconnecting an external hard drive. Instead of simply pulling out the USB chord, you should first run the Windows "Safely Remove Hardware" function located in the lower right hand corner of your TaskBar,

I've had this handy little guy for over a year, and it's performed flawlessly. I have no complaints at all!



It transfers files quickly, runs quietly and has never lost any of my data. Plus, its small size and the fact that it doesn't require a bulky power cable make it ideal for traveling. I've used it to watch movies on long plane flights, and it works like a charm. It also transfers from PC (using XP) to Mac (using Tiger) without any troubles. In short, it is everything I wanted it to be and more!

I bought several of these to store my external drives. I have several different brands besides Western Digital. It holds the Western Digital perfectly without straining the zipper. It also holds the Maxtor drive ok as well. Simple Techs are a harder fit and strain the zipper. Also, the handle attached to the zipper broke. Not a biggy because there's always the cariber clip. Overall...it does what it's supposed to. It protects them.

i bought this at a college bookstore discount less than a year ago. it was working fine for the most part, although every once in a while (after about 4-5 months) it would make a loud, ugly noise that sounded like something was scraping around on the inside. i should have replaced it then, but nothing seemed to have been damaged or lost and i didn't have the money.



all of a sudden, today it dies. it turns on but won't show up in finder. files are all gone, some of them irreplaceably. suddenly i have no options for backing up my computer, which i having a few problems of its own. looking for the warranty right now, hopefully they'll just refund me the money instead of sending a new unit.



it's not worth the trouble! get something else. i've heard good things about the seagate freeagent products, so i might look at those next.

I've been using this hard drive for over 2 years now with zero problems. It is used daily as my main music, video and picture editing drive. I move gigs of files to and from it daily and it hasn't skipped a beat.



I love the all-in-one media card reader and that it works even when hard drive itself isn't on.



I don't use the software it came with to do the one touch backup as I organize and backup items manually.



It's extremely quiet and doesn't generate too much heat unlike some other drives. It's quick and responsive.

I've had no problems with this drive except for the loose fitting connections on the rear of the unit. I've not used the back-up software that came with the drive. I've used both the Windows Vista back-up program and third party software with no problems. I was sad to find that Western Digital no longer manufactured the drive soon after I made my purchase and would have rated it with five stars because of this fact as well as the connection problem.

Number of reviews have been written about the problems with this drive. my addition;

Drive and configration is unreliable, as a backup drive, it is not dependable. I bought two, one failed out of the box, the other is margional. If the drive failes to connect through USB to the system as disk drive, the software backes up the information on the C drive. Assume your C drive fails, backup you thought you bought is non existant. The reliability of the configration is many times worse then internal hard drive, and it has a questional backup software.



I tried to get Western digital to help, I would have been glad to pay additionl money to understand the problem and have this beautifully packaged drive to work. No such ideas were forth comming. Enough, enough?????????????.

It's a great drive as long as it works. Mine started behaving erratically and I thought the OS wasn't recognizing it. After much troublshooting, the drive told me what the problem was. It's the case, the connection to the drive inside. I am buying a new case and hoping I can still use the drive.



So my buying the extended warranty was a waste of money. I can return the drive, but I lose 200G of data. I void the warranty by opening up the case and trying to save the drive, but it's worth the gamble.



I bought 2 of these, months apart, and they both developed problems. I loved them while they lasted, but I got lemons.



UPDATE -- I bought new enclosure for the drive and it works fine, years later.

 "Much faster than standard 5400 RPM drive, small battery life hit." 2009-03-27

In a Sony Vaio SZ650N, it's a big upgrade over the stock 5400 RPM drive, but the battery drain is noticeable (whether that's related to the rotational speed or to the stock drive being a Hybrid HDD is the unanswered question here).



Installation is not easy but with a service manual it's not impossible either. The drive itself seems to be of high quality, although obviously it's too early to tell. On the road notebooks seem to eat through drives, so if WD offers a 5 year warranty I think that's a good sign.



Another small complaint: I wanted the drive with a free-fall sensor and purchased this instead. I think all the drives should be manufactured with this sensor, or it should be in bold letters in the product name, IE "WITHOUT FREE-FALL SENSOR". Because I'm not going to return the drive becuase of that little mistake, but given past fiascos with busted notebook drives I need all the protection I can get.
