"1 TB Sata II Drive" 2009-08-20
By Shannon Reynolds (Milford, OH United States)
This drive was so easy to install it was unbelievable. I only wish they would include the Serial Cable with the disk drive. I had to buy a cable for it online. If you are replacing a drive, it works great. If not, then you have to buy a cable. I found one online for about $6.00.

 "QUIET!" 2009-07-24
By Tom Paine (socialist occupied Maryland)
How quiet? Even though I'm running programs, burning DVDs, doing things I just KNOW is demanding intense hard drive activity, I can't tell the thing is running. It's fast enough for iMovie, iDVD and is a good "replacement" for the stock 320 gb HD that came with my iMAC. Store the old drive somewhere safe in case your iMAC (or, God forbid, this drive) ever crashes so you can replace it before you take your iMAC in for service.

 "Mine works well" 2008-09-26
By Mark Colan (Medford, MA USA)
I bought one of these for my HTPC, which seems like a perfect use for it. The drive offers a balance between performance and power consumption, plus it is very quiet.

You should know that this drive is not intended to be as fast as a true 7200rpm drive; power savings and quieter operation result from taking the speed down. If performance is more important, there are faster 1TB drives; look elsewhere.

In installed mine and it worked perfectly, and still does, as I expected it would. The system performance does not suffer in ways that I notice, but on the HTPC ultra-fast disks is not a priority.

UPDATE: I bought a second one for 2TB on my media/HTPC ... it also works well.

 "When it works!" 2008-09-05
By Robert Stone (New York State)
First drive failed Diagnostics. Second drive from WDC, not the Vendor, was DOA (Drive was referbished, and just off the (re)assembly line. If you yell loud enough, WDC will swap out a NEW one not another referb. As they say, Third time is a charm. Works great, saves power. I don't notice the reduced performance over a straight 7200 RPM Drive. The Vendor was not to blame in any way for the drive problems. WDC needs to clean up their act, quality control is very poor on these drives.

 "Great Drive Great Price" 2009-09-21
By Mike (Knoxville, TN USA)
The drive worked perfectly right out of the box. Truly plug and play. The box claimed there was a paper manual in the box but there was none - but none was required. As my system already had an e-SATA port all that was required to install it was plug the supplied e-SATA cable into the computer and the drive and then turn on the computer.

The blue operating light on the front is a bit obnoxious but as I do not leave the drive on all the time, it is not a problem for me.

 "Great portable storage." 2009-09-12
By G. Kajiwara
Great product. 1TB of storage for ~$100 with free shipping. Drive is eSata capable and comes with an adapter that fits a regular card slot on any case. Also included is an eSata cable and an A-B USB cable. The trade off for these extras is the lack of any back-up software but I am not looking for any 'one touch' back-up solution but a portable external drive to hold movies, music, and games. It also might have been cheaper to buy an internal drive and an enclosure but I wanted a robust aluminum case and the eSata extras.

"Excellent external hard drive - fast, quiet and compact" 2009-09-12
By Jake (SF Bay Area, CA)
My CAXM 1TB External Hard Drive contains Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 Hard Disk. It's a very good disk for an external hard drive. Check out tomshardware review of Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B.

Here are some disk specs from the review: "... HDT721010SLA360, which can be broken down like so: Hitachi Deskstar T-series (HDT), 7,200 RPM (72), maximum family capacity 1 TB (the first 10), actual capacity (the second 10), the generation (S) and Z-height (L stands for 26.1 mm), the interface (3 = SATA/300) and the cache capacity (6 = 16 MB)."

So, it is a 7200 RPM disk with 16 MB cache and quite low idle power consumption - 5.4W, which should make it perfect for eSATA capable DVRs.

It works well with my DirecTV HR22-100 DVR.

The black CAXM measures 7 5/8" x 4 3/8" x 1 1/4" or 193mm/112mm/32mm, it has a power switch (very convenient for a backup disk which is not going to be always on), eSATA and USB 2.0 interfaces, the enclosure is aluminum and it has no cooling fans. The stand is plastic and it is held in place by friction, it's a little flimsy, but does the job.

The disk looks and feels high quality and it is not going to be an eyesore on your desk or next to your DVR.

My disk came with the stand, an eSATA bracket for a desktop, a 100-244V~ 50-60Hz Power adapter with 5' adapter to disk cable (the adapter looks a little different from the one, shown on the product pictures and it measures: 3.5"x2"x1.3", excluding the integrated two prong power plug), a 48" eSATA cable and a 40" USB cable. Very nice package for the price!

I have had my HD for almost two years now and not a single problem, except the time shortly after purchase when I switched it on AFTER turning on my computer (computer does not recognize device under such conditions when linked to the esata input-and I almost returned it) also DO NOT turn off until AFTER you have turned of your computer.

A faultless, smooth running device I highly recommend this product, I have several HD's and this one is by far the best.

 "Sturdy, silent and reliable" 2009-08-22
By Jose Leal (California, United States)
If you can never get enough space to store your HiDef movies (about 40 Gb each), software, music collections, etc, a good idea is to get one or more of these sturdy external units, which in my experience are very silent and hassle free. You can even stream media from the external hard drive, with no loss of audio or picture quality; data transfer is very reliable too. I tried other brand names and they get much hotter and are at least twice as noisy. In few words: a great value for your money.

 "Great Storage Device Choice" 2009-01-19
By S. Privette (Bronx, NY United States)
I purchased the Calvary Storage CADB for my husband as a Christmas present. This 1 TB unit is actually 2 - 500gb drives, which he actually prefers for backup purposes. He stated that this device is a fast and reliable unit, especially given it's small size. He also likes that this storage device runs quiet, and the fact that it didn't overheat when he left it on all night.

My only dissapointment is that I received this unit from Amazon.com in a non-retail package and it didn't come with instructions nor a setup CD. My husband had to go online to download drivers and find how to configure the device. Amazon.com should make sure that the buyers they use, are not trying to pass off 2nd hand or previously returned items as genuine new products.

This is the first time that I received an item from Amazon.com without everything in the box. I've ordered from Amazon.com for years and will most likely continue to use them.

 "Super simple" 2008-12-29
By Richard V. Mullen
Plug it in and turn it on. It is ready to use in about 15 seconds depending on your computer speed. Mine came default working at 1TB so all I had to do was plug in and turn it on. Movies play perfect off of it but it is a little noisy (about as loud as a whisper). It is built like a tank compared to those plastic versions so it should take an accidental kick under the desk. One downside is the toggle switch is on the lower back of it.

 "Reliably Good" 2008-12-20
By Experteo (Siloam Springs, AR USA)
I got this about 2 months ago and it has run without a hitch. The fan is not as loud as some people claim. Maybe they were earlier models or something. In my opinion, this fan is relatively quiet and that's speaking from the perspective of it being on in a small quiet dorm room. One thing for sure is that this drive has two 500 GB hard drives inside (actually each drive is 466 GB or something, but that's marketing for you). I mainly keep this off most of the time and just turn it on for backing up my 500 GB Western Digital External Hard Drive and my laptop as well. I actually managed to catch this for sale at $130 after watching the price for 8 months. $65 per 500 GB hard drive is a steal compared to all the other 500 GB hard drives out there. In time there will be better deals, but this hard drive has been good for me. Remember people, always have a backup of all your data because you never know when you hard drive will fail after at least 1 year of constant use.

"Very fast drive, no spin downT" 2009-05-18
By TB-10 Pilot (Columbus, Ohio)
This drive just screams. It is very fast, super quiet and if it didn't have the light on it you'd never know it was on. The only thing (a quibble) that I wish it had was an automatic spindown mode as I use it for backups only. My other USB drives (WD mostly) will spin down when not accessed for a period of time, conserving power.

The good point is that this drive is available immediately after a length of time but it's still drawing power and putting revolutions on the spindle.

But either way, for the money, you can't beat it!

"Configuring this NAS server for Linux NFS access" 2009-08-29
By Wendell Craig Baker (Palo Alto, CA)
I purchased this product as a heavy-tonnage fileserver to be accessed from Linux hosts exclusively via NFS v3. I was not interested in HTTP, FTP or CIFS(samba) file sharing. The NFS access was the high-order selling point (I would not have purchased it if CIFS was the only supported protocol).

The following details how to complete the configuration of NFS so that the uid/gid of NFS clients are respected on the server (not squashed). The default configuration is to squash all client uids/gids to 'nfsnobody' and export some parts of the server in readonly mode. There is no need to "break into" the box to remediate the deficiencies (ignore web sites that suggest such a procedure). This is your server, you own it, you are maintaining it to suit a standard use case that is normally accounted for. The Infrant (now NetGear) ReadyNAS NV-series units handle this use case out of the box. The Advanced Mode allows you to remediate the NFS configuration of the unit as an explicit product feature. Western Digital is to be congratulated for providing this forward-looking field-accessibility method.

Firmware revision 2.01.92 of 2009-07-31.

Assumptions:

1. The server is at a DHCP-configured IPv4 address. Another (Linux) client can mount /nfs/Public. You have created a new NFS "share" at /nfs/MyExample. Files & directories created from your NFS client are created with uid/gid "nfsnobody" instead of current system uid/gid.

2. NFS was not enabled by default when you boot the server for the first time [you enable it from the GUI as directed in the User Manual]

3. The default setup has NFS configured to export all partitions 'all_squash', 'root_squash' in /etc/exports. Certain partitions such as /nfs/Public are exported readonly; which is unhelpful. You will need to fix both of these problems manually by the method herein.

Remediation Method:

1. You need to get ssh root access to your box to modify the NFS configurations. You will need to be very careful doing this as is always the case with the unconstrained root privilege level. Use your power wisely (and keep records of what you do). Enable ssh root access from the GUI at System->Advanced->RootAccess[SSH Access] - enable. The factory ssh root password, is listed on fileserver's admin web page. Use it. Change it once you log in with /usr/bin/password (and keep records).

2. Using a (gnome-terminal) from elwewhere, login as root to your fileserver with 'ssh -l root' (and the password supplied by the filserver's initial configuration page).

3. See /etc/exports contains NFS configured inappropriately.

$ cat /etc/exports

/nfs/Public *(ro,all_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=65534)

/nfs/Download *(ro,all_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=65534)

/nfs/MyExample *(rw,all_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=65534)

4. Remediate the NFS access permissions as you desire.

mv /etc/exports /etc/exports.orig

cp /etc/exports.orig /etc/exports

vi /etc/exports

Change all export rules to be 'rw,no_root_squash'

5. Check your work

$ cat /etc/exports

/nfs/Public *(rw,no_root_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=65534)

/nfs/Download *(rw,no_root_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=65534)

/nfs/MyExample *(rw,no_root_squash,sync,insecure,anonuid=65534,anongid=65534)

6. /usr/sbin/exportfs -a

Done.

NFS now creates files with the client's NFS uid/gid and you may be root on the client and act with rights on the server.

Others have reported issues with the media-serving against the 4T unit (see that page). Perhaps those issues can be remediated, applying suitable care and knowledge, with the root shell access feature.

"Easy setup but slow performance" 2009-06-28
By Tadashi (Harker Heights, TX United States)
As the title indicates the setup for this network drive was very simple and did not have any issues accessing it from XP, Vista, and Windows 7 laptops. The next hurdle will be trying to access it from my Linux laptop.

The only issues was trying to access the data from a remote location. The software provided links you to a file sharing company which charges a monthly fee. However, they do not support 64-bit operating systems.

That being said this file server is one of the slowest drives I have ever worked with. I have it setup as the default RAID 5 (striping with data reducndancy). It is suppose to get the speed benefits of RAID 0 but with the data reducndancy of RAID 4. The best I have gotten is a transfer rate of 1.1 MB/s (USB has been around 16 MB/s) so transferring 250 GB can take up to a week.

This product is nice and compact as well as quiet and produces low heat. The USB connects are only for backup (you can plug in a USB device and the WD fileserver will copy it probably faster than it transfers over the network - I have not tried it yet). You cannot share the devices that are plugged into it.

This product is perfect for storing large amounts of data but do not expect speed adequate to run appliations from it or transferring very large files quickly.
