Designed and manufactured to enterprise-class standards to provide enterprise reliability in high duty cycle environments. With 1.2 million hours MTBF, WD Raptor drives have the highest available reliability rating on a high capacity drive. With a next-generation SATA interface, 1.5 Gb/s data transfer rate, native command queuing (NCQ), and 16 MB cache, these drives deliver optimum performance. RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER), a feature unique to WD, prevents drive fallout caused by the extended hard drive error-recovery processes common to desktop drives. Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) optimizes operation and performance when the drives are used in vibration-prone, multidrive systems such as rack-mounted servers or network storage. WD Raptor features FlexPower connector technology that accepts power from either industry standard or new SATA power supplies.

"Fastest non SCSI drive available....." 2008-02-25
By Rob
Built several performance systems using these drives in a RAID 0, dual Raptor drive configuration, with a generic sata for backup/ storeage. The only reason to get these drives is pure speed, as the $/gb is not competitive with generic 7200 rpm drives.

That said, typical throughputs (as benchmarked by HDtach) with the boxes I've built are ~135 megabytes per second, sustained (after the disk cache is emptied) over a simulated full disk write - far faster than the typical throughput of ~ 50 mb/ second of a typical sata. Anything disk intesive loads ridiculously fast. Well worth the money, esp. in a RAID 0 config. for the demanding user thats willing to pay the extra money for the performance gains.

Pro's: Very fast, with great life expectancy (MTBF of 1.2 million hours) Large cache

Cons: Expensive for the capacity, louder and hotter than a typical 7200 rpm drive (although this should be expected, given the 10k rpm)

 "Great, fast drive" 2007-07-13
By J. Ostenson (Highland, UT United States)
While this drive does produce a bit more noise than many 7,200RPM drives, consider that it's spinning at 10,000RPM, so more noise is to be expected I would think. And, of course, it also gets a little warmer than the normal hard drive so make sure your case has proper cooling. The rotation speed makes a difference, even a noticeable one. I saw many benchmarks attesting to this fact before purchasing the drive myself, but I knew it was worth it for myself when I saw how fast Windows loaded with this drive compared to the 7,200 RPM drive I had before

If you play games with long load times, move lots of files around, or just want Windows to boot up faster, this drive is worth the price.

"I would still recommend a bigger 16 MB cache hard drive" 2007-06-27
By Munya (California)
All you will get is a whole lotta noise, and the speed is really not all that , even when I overclocked the sucker. My other PC using a Maxtor 16 MB cache 320 GB Sata 2 hard drive does way better for the same price.

Don't waste you money, for the price I paid I could have bought me a 500GB hard drive with all the partitions I ever dreamed off.

Western Digital says that they do not support Vista. This is what there tech support told me. and that I should get another O.S. I could not beleive that when the guy told me that. So, instead I bought a Seagate Hard drive. Bye to Western Digital.

 "NOT RETAIL BOXED ITEM" 2008-03-25
By maxGamer (Seattle, Washington)
This drive came today wrapped in bubble wrap and looking like an OEM resale item. I checked the warranty online with WD and it's good, thank goodness, or I'd have really raised heck.

Anyone looking for a REAL, FULL RETAIL BOXED version should shy away from Electronics Direct. Learn from my mistake.

Heck, for an unboxed version I could have saved another 40.00 and gone elsewhere.

 "Great Drive" 2008-12-28
By Aaron S. Evans (Amarillo, TX USA)
Mine was a refurbished item. Works great though. Not much more I can say. I've always been very pleased with Western Digital hard drives. This particular line won't work with some VIA chipsets too well, but you can get a SATA PCI card for $20 that'll fix that problem.

"Plug and Play, All The Way!" 2008-05-30
By L. T. Brockway (California)
I feel really happy with this new Western Digital 500GB drive! I had to change my order from another drive due to the SATA II design required for my MacPro. The excellent vendor, Mega Micro Devices Inc., gave personal attention to my request for the right drive. I received the drive in two days! I opened my computer, unpacked the drive, slid it into the open bay, closed up and powered up. Less than 15 minutes! I partitioned and formatted the drive, loaded a huge collection of photos. Done! I ran a check on the disk and found no laws or errors.

 "Hard to beat" 2008-04-27
By iouzero (Seattle, WA USA)
To date, after a month or so's useage, I haven't a hint of a problem. The drives worked right, and continue to work right, and I have confidence they will continue to work right. Good products at decent price.

Only slight quibble: I originally bought these drives to use in conjunction with a Cooldrives caddyless drive, but found that their tiny difference in thickness caused them to be unuseable in that drive, as they become stuck and require some fancy juggling to remove. I substituted a Thermaltake Docking Station for the Cooldrive, and things are now going like clockwork.

 "incorrect shipping weight" 2008-01-16
By C. Hill
I will update this review once I receive the HDD. This is to inform anyone who might purchase this that the shipping weight of 15lbs is incorrect. As of Jan 16th 08 the error has not been corrected. I contacted Electronics Direct, and after 15 mins of them telling me that I did something wrong, they conceded that a 1.7 pound HDD is probably not going to be shipped in a 15 pound container. They investigated and found out that they had sent the incorrect info to Amazon. They did refund the difference in shipping, but I doubt I will ever buy from them again, after getting hung up on twice.

"This was the last straw" 2008-12-03
By I. Slatas
I bought a WD300BB (30GB) back in '01 and bought a WD1200JB in '02 to act as a back up drive for a few computers. I got it just in time because after less than 18 months the WD300BB got the click of death. So the WD1200JB became the primary drive for a few months until I bought this drive, the WD1600JB in late '03. While the WD1600JB was shipping, the WD1200JB partially died. I was able to use data recovery software to get most of my data onto the WD1600JB, but it got the click of death in less than a month! 3 dead drives in less than just over 2 years! Western Digital, NEVER AGAIN! I still have a 2GB Seagate from 1996 that works just fine! The rest of my drives are Maxtor, Seagates, and a Hitachi in my laptop. No other brand has failed me so badly as Western Digital.

"Western Digital is the best, but avoid this model!" 2007-08-14

Everything about this drive is pretty standard. I've had nothing but good luck with WD hard drives, I even have 3 in my home machine. HOWEVER, I bought this particular model around May of 06, and now in July of 07 it has already crashed..

4-8 years is a reasonable life expectancy for WD drives, so this one fails miserably.. Just choose a different model, there are many..

 "Good 80gig Hard Drive" 2008-08-06
By GroundStar (Battle Mountain, NV, USA)
In a time when 80 gig hard drive are out of style if not use, this was a good unit. Ran continuously for three years without a lost bite. The drive did not produce much noise while spinning, however you could hear the heads moving back and forth, but for me that is a good sign. Unexpected movement of the drive head did lead me to a virus.

By Ruben Guadiana (Silver City, NM United States)
I attempted to format and install this drive (80gig 7200) last night and the computer saw it as only a 30gig drive??? The bios read it as a 30gig drive and the Linux Mandrake install saw it as only having 30 as well. I don't know what could be the problem, I will try installing it on another pc to see what happens. It doesn't seem anyone else has had this problem, I will research a little more, in the mean time, buyers beware!

 "good retail drive" 2002-03-04
By David Koski (San Jose, CA United States)
I bought this after I had two IBM 75GXP drives start showing errors. It is significantly quieter than those drives, measures about the same speed and from my research is more reliable (although my research also uncovered the fact that old floppy disks may be more reliable than the IBM drives). I had no problem installing this in my computer and installing Win 2K on it. The drive comes with a few screws, and an ultra dma cable (use this for best performance). If you are not using Win 2K or Win XP you may have to monkey around with ultra dma modes.

This was a good buy.

I ate the entire cost of the defective hard drive.

I used one of these to upgrade a TiVo HD unit. The drive ran cool during the upgrade process. In operation it is extremely quiet - I have never been able to hear it seek, start/stop, etc. According to the specs. it is designed for A/V applications, and is very low in energy consumption. I think it was a great value for the money. If you want to upgrade a TiVo HD, it is cheap and easy to do with this drive and WinMFS.

The internal hard drive on my Series 3 TiVo died while using the Netflix service.
