 "WD Time Bomb" 2009-08-28
By D. Lockwald (Minnisota, USA)
This is more a warning based on the total failure of Western Digital in this product then it is a review.

I purchased a WD Sharespace as a nice home server. It worked well streaming video out over my home net using NFS. Then it failed.

Now, I've been using computers for years. So computer failure after one month is not a huge issue. Happens to the best products. Call up and receive an RMA'd system. Things are going well. Now you have to know two things. One, my system was dead wouldn't get on the network. Two, it is a totally headless system so when it won't even take an IP address from your DHCP it is a brick. So I take my new system, plug it in, configure it. Works great, things are still going well. Put my old drives into the new system so I can save all my data. Now the new system acts just like the old system, curious. Put new drives in old system...system works......seems WD DIDN'T make the firmware and system embedded. It's on the drives! The drives die.....no system.......now I'm worried. Call WD support (ah talking to ESL script readers, THE BEST!) They inform me that nothing is supported and for a lovely fee they will be happy to send me to a data recovery company.

So now the parts you need to know. WD doesn't sell parts for this. They do not have anyway to get the data off in case of drive failure. If anything happens you are dead in the water and not even getting a totally new WD will get your data back. I had assumed that this was and imbedded system with 4 raid 5 drives. Failure of a drive just means that I can recover using the embedded OS. This is not the case, Failure of 1 drive means that you can rebuild the RAID using the OS on the drives themselves but if anything happens beyond that your toast.

If I was an owner (which I am) I'd sell the sharespace double quick and just get a raid card and some drives. A little more messy but when your system fails then you have parts and options. Something you don't have with WD.

 "Failed me." 2009-08-28
By Todd Singleton (Jamestown NY)
I initially had no problem with the device but after about a week, the Sharespace shut me out! I could not access the storage and tech support couldn't seem to figure out why. I'm sure with some more exploration, I may have figured it out but after 10 days of trying, it was an expensive "puzzle" to keep around.

"Looks Sharp, But Not a Good Experience" 2009-07-26
By charper (New Hampshire, USA)
I purchased this item with the understanding (through the reviews) that you need some technical proficiency to troubleshoot if any issues crop up. I only had this item two weeks before I ended up returning it due to network issues-initially, it was an intermittent problem that I attributed to my lack of understanding of networks and proper settings, etc. However, it eventually failed to communicate at all, and a friend of mine who is an IT professional and experienced in networks did some troubleshooting with the drive on his own system and came to the conclusion that the networking hardware built into the ShareSpace was faulty.

Overall, I agree with the performance issues noted--I don't know if this would have been a show-stopper, as it was only an issue during initial file transfer. I also didn't have the drive long enough to explore its performance as a media server. Troubleshooting was not much fun, and the documentation finally led me to 'return to manufacturer' as the only solution. Getting data back off the system I am leaving to my IT professional friend who helped me troubleshoot--I learned from this experience that it is definitely a good idea to give any new drive a chance to prove its stability before committing the data to it!

"The Perfect Solution for a Laptop or PS3 HDD Upgrade" 2009-08-22
By A. Dent (Minas Anor, GD)
QUICK EVALUATION AND RATING:

The Western Digital 500GB 2.5" SATA II is a quiet, fast, easy to install, drive. Based on my experience with WD (I own several), the Scorpios are reliable drives. The 2.5" SATAs easily and perfectly mount inside a PS3's or laptop's drive bay where they can replace the laptop's or the PS3's original 20-40-60-80-160GB drive and the new PS3 120GM SLIM's without voiding the warranty.

I have this exact model running inside my laptop as I am writing this review. The upgrade was relatively easy and it's been working well for the past several months. I can't think of any flaws and the price is right so the 500GB Scorpio Blue earns its 5 stars.

______________________________________

Laptop Upgrade:

My 2 year old Thinkpad T60 came with a wimpy 60GB SATA drive. I needed the ability to upgrade to the much larger 500GB and do it without having to reinstall the OS, apply the service packs and then reinstall and configure 100 different little apps.

Acronis True Image Home 2009 PC Backup & Recovery allowed me to do all of the above in about one hour. Its Utilities section has a 'clone' option that would copy EVERYTHING, including the Master Boot Record/Sector (MBR) from the puny 60GB drive unto the 500GB while allowing me to control the size of the active partition - this while the 500GB was connected through a USB wire and the laptop booted off the program's CD.

Once the operation completed (50 minutes) I simply removed the old 60GB drive off my laptop and replaced it with the 500GB drive. Once the laptop was turned back on it booted up happily, with a 200GB master partition and a 300GB second partition. There are 3 words that I have to use to describe the process: PERFECTION and COMPLETE SATISFACTION. This capability alone is worth the price of this product.

To my surprise, with the new drive, the Primary Hard Disk score as computed by Microsoft (right click on 'My computer' then select 'Properties') jumped from a decent 4.8 to an unexpected 5.7.

______________________________________

PS3 Upgrade:

I have replaced my original PS3 drive with a 320 GB WD quite a while ago but, over the last weekend, I helped a friend of mine upgrade his PS3's with this one. He decided to pick this model and, since I had a great experience with the 320GB version, I encouraged him to go WD.

My friend believes that the 500GB is at the peak of price/performance curve at this time. Like me, he has no plans of storing a movie library on the PS3 so he expects for the 500GB to be sufficient for the life of his console. After that, it's likely that he'll be buying the next generation game/multimedia machine. The 320 GB model that I used some time ago is still available but the 500 GB is only $30 more so it makes a lot of sense to spend a little more and enjoy the extra storage.

Advice to the PS3 upgraders from someone who, after some hesitation, actually did it and then did it again a few more times for friends and family since:

- If you need to format this drive or any drive to FAT32 - and you need a FAT32 partition for the PS3 backup - the best utility I found [...] - Google it and you shall find it out there. I'm not reviewing the formatter utility but I can tell you that it does a drive in less than 10 seconds AND it works on Vista too.

- It helps to have a USB-connected drive handy to back up your PS3 content before upgrading. With one of these as the backup device, the PS3 fully restores EVERYTHING, including whatever copywrited or protected objects, such as, in my case the PS2 memory cards emulations and all the game saves.

I will not go into upgrade details because there are lots of guides on the Net including great Youtube videos on how to do it but, if anyone has any questions, do leave a note and I shall reply as soon as I get to read it.

To conclude, the upgrade proceeded without any glitches and my friend has now a perfectly working console where storage won't be an issue for some time to come. PS3 performance appears to the same, which is how it should be. I haven't heard back from my friend in 8 days now so, my assumption is that all is working well and he's busy enjoying his upgraded PS3.

Initially took me a while to configure back up. It is a sleek drive and I find it very reliable. I have no issues backing up my Mac, but when it comes to Vista, the backup has hiccups. It doesn't start backup automatically, sometimes. I need to click on the folders to backup and then the back up kicks. And back up takes much longer in Vista!

"Western Digital My Passport Elite 320GB" 2009-05-19
By A. Blythen
A good, easily connected and transportable external hard drive. The synchronisation system/software is a bit clumsy, especially given the limited readily provided information on this. For example providing all the folders to be synchronised (which then links the sub-folders), however if new sub-folders are created these don't automatically get included. Very frustrating when you discover this after departing from your "base computer" with the drive. Once this aware of this though it works alright.

I love this sleak little thing. You can find an inexpensive case for it almost anywhere too (I use a small camera case from Walmart). One drawback is the lack of access to inside the hard plastic case incase you need to replace the drive unit in the future.

These drives are highly unreliable. This is my second and both quit after short periods of time. Big problem is what do you do with the data still on the drives? Are you willing to risk someone reading the drive data when you return them? I was not and talking to one of their techs was a waste of time. These are throwaway and junk.

By Ian Courage (York, PA USA)
This drive was very easy to put in the computer. My HP found it immediately, and it sort of installed by itself. It wasn't showing up but I didn't switch the jumper for it to be a slave drive :P. Once we did that, I had to install it with this program:

http://support.wdc.com/download/dlg/dlgsetup11_win.zip

Once I did that very easily and quickly, my new, big (for an older type of drive), and speedy drive was ready to go! I'm currently moving stuff from my 40GB to it, so I can boot, and overall run faster. 5 stars, other than the documentation! That, and other stuff for the drive, can be found online.

Wish I had read these reviews before -- but here we go. The drive does not include any setup materials, instructions or software. That means if your computer is not functioning you will need to find another computer to download their software. When I called Western Digital the person I spoke to was not helpful and could care less. If you are dealing with a crashed computer, I would not recommend this product or this company.
