 "SUPER simple set-up" 2009-08-04

Rec'd my RAID drives yesterday.... SUPER simple to set up. Unbox, install CD, plug in, and ready to go within 5 minutes. Nice look to it. Quiet and power efficient.

 "Overall Good Buy" 2009-07-24
By Jasmine Fitzwilliam (San Diego, CA)
I had the 500GB WD MyBook for nearly a year before I decided I needed a lot more space. The 500GB model was awesome, completely reliable, and in fact, came on a 30-day train tour of the states with me. You wouldn't think it was portable, but it worked! Not too shabby!

The 2TB mirrored edition is decent and it holds its own. I love the uber-protection I get from the RAID 1 level. But I really miss the multi-port connectivity and the firewire of my old model! USB2.0 just is not cutting the mustard with me -- I find it slower. The plug also comes out way too often from the lightest of jiggling/shifting/moving. I hate that I can't hook this up to several things at once... so, overall, it's a decent item, but I'd love to see this souped up next time I'm shopping for additional space.

 "WD MyBooks Drop Connections" 2009-07-09
By DanJo (East Wenatchee WA USA)
We've got about five of the 2TB Western Digital MyBooks for our IT department. We've had them a couple years, approximately. We've learned it's a bad idea to try to use them for anything more demanding than, as advertised, storing photos. For instance, we've learned it's a bad idea to use these in association with backup-to-disk applications. No Go. These USB devices seem only suited for static data that doesn't need to be referenced often. They're far too slow, and they are far too ready to drop their connection to the PC to which they are attached. We've tried them on a variety of PCs and servers. Even today, for example, I'm just trying to copy data to them from across the network -- the device cannot maintain a connection long enough to copy an 800MB folder to it.

We have not tried the firewire connection to see if that works any better.

 "The Quiet Silent Type" 2009-06-20
By Sohail Khwaja (Pittsburgh, PA, USA)
Being an avid photographer, I have a huge and growing collection of photographs that I would hate to lose to a drive failure. I have been using a WD MyBook 500GB drive for a few years without a hitch. I decided to purchase this Mirror system to protect what to me is irreplaceable.

I have only positive comments about this drive, as it has been the easiest backup system I have ever used. Right out of the box, the plug and play with Windows XP was seamless. Setting up the profiles was also a breeze. I setup one profile to backup all my pictures and another profile to backup all my documents. You can specify specific folders for profiles if you only want to backup specific files and not everything in "My Pictures" etc.

Every day, as I work I can see the blue indicator on the front scroll up and down, as it quietly and automatically backs up any changes I make. It provides me a sense of security knowing that I don't have to wait for a batch backup since the system is keeping up instantaneously with me.

The enclosure stays cool to the touch, at most getting tepid and never warm. The fans are super quiet and unless I have absolutely no other sounds in the room (a rarity as the PC is also on) I don't even know the drive is there. Whereas the 500GB MyBook clacks when it initiates activity, the 2TB drive never makes a sound.

The enclosure has a polished surface and could be easily scratched. I would have preferred the matte surface like the 500GB MyBook. I chose not to take the protective plastic wrap off the drive, instead I cut off the excess that wrapped around to the vented parts. As I expected I have had no issues so far.

One thing to note is if after setting up a profile, you move around or delete some files, the software will give you passive error messages about not being able to find the files and/or path. This in no way impacts the backup/mirroring and is only visible if you open the console window and click on the profile (an exclamation mark is your indicator of errors).

All in all, I highly recommend this drive to anyone who wants a secure backup of precious files. It is well worth the price.

"Unreliable and questionable RAID software" 2009-06-13
By J. Davey (New York, New York USA)
I purchased this drive with the intent to backup all my family videos, photos and other files. Currently my file server actually has a RAID 1 setup but I thought redundancy can never be too much.

Well - The My Book Mirror Edition was not the answer. At the end of all of this I purchased two of these units, having each one successively fail on me.

I probably only ended up loading 300+ gigs on the drives. They would work well for 2-3 days and then when transferring a large file (typically video) all hell would break loose with the WD raid manager saying I had issues (red icon). After each incident the external drive would not be recognisable by my PC (running XP). The drives would also not work on another of my PCs. I would get dialogs of Unknown USB something and couldn't get the drives to mount.

In both instances I had to take out the physical hard drives to remove my personal data and the actual drives ran without issue. Therefore I can only surmise that the WD system for the RAID setup or the manager is not ready for prime time.

Given my personal experience I would highly recommend people to not consider purchasing this ext. drive if they want peace of mind.
