 "So far so good..." 2009-06-26
By Joseph W. Poirier
It was formatted for a Mac but i fixed that. Two partitions to seperate my music from everything else.

I had my last passport for a year before it started spitting out bad sectors (I am positive its because I let someone borrow it), I scanned this one and it came up 100% clean.

- Fast (even with usb)

- USB and Firewire

- Good amount of storage

"Attractive, featherweight drive, but No Firewire Boot!" 2009-06-18
By ecotopian
I bought one of these but returned it after discovering it wouldn't boot my Mac via Firewire. I have owned a lot of Firewire drives, and this is the only one that would not boot a Mac. This is a show-stopping flaw in my opinion. I liked the design, capacity, and light weight, but would not recommend this drive to anyone needing a bootable Firewire drive. Mac owners expect Firewire drives to be bootable, so this deficiency should be mentioned in the product listings. but it never is. Also, the Firewire 800 is slow. It is only a hair faster than Firewire 400. Forget about this drive. Buy a real Firewire drive like the G-Drive Mini, a LaCie, or the OWC line.

 "Unreliable FireWire Performance" 2009-05-31
By FlamingoMom (Boston, MA USA)
I ordered this primarily because of the faster FireWire interface & small size. FireWire connections do not work most of the time - I've tried using it on 2 desktop Macs & 2 MacBooks. The FireWire only worked on the laptops & then not all the time. FireWire on this HD obviously needs its own source of power & can't get enough from the computer connection. USB works fine - had I known this I would have saved money & gone for a USB drive. It might work fine on Windows, but I bought it for Mac formatting. Save money - buy a small USB external.

 "WORKS EXACTLY AS ADVERTISED" 2009-05-23
By Bob-On-The -Go (St. louis, MO)
I've had this drive for a few weeks now. It is super sleek looking and it sets on the base of my IMac. The silver color is a perfect match. It looks like it is part of the computer! I use it with Apple's Time Machine. It has worked flawlessly from the first back-up which took only about 4 1/2 hours. Not bad considering I had about 360 GB to back up and I used the USB connection to do it. Apple's Time Capsule takes longer than that even with a direct ethernet connection. I have not tried firewire yet since many of the reviews say it has bugs; but I am sure WD will come up with a firmware fix and I noted that most of the complaints were from Mac Book users. I have an IMac and I think it has something to do with the power connection to the Mac Book since these drives are self-powering. I suspect that firewire will work just fine with an IMac. I am going to buy a new Mac for my other house and I intend to take this drive with me to transfer everything to the new computer. I am very pleased with this product and I got a super good price from Amazon seller charlie902.

"Nice drive, but Firewire has died" 2009-04-23
By Michael Macrone (San Francisco, CA USA)
I was very happy with this drive, until after less than three months of light use, the Firewire port died. I tried both the 800/400 and 800/800 cables, on two different Macs, and neither machine mounts the drive. (Disk Utility doesn't see it, either.) When I plug in the drive with either cable, one light is illuminated, the platter spins briefly and then stops, and the single light is extinguished.

The USB port is still functional; and I can use that to connect to my desktop PC (which has no Firewire port) and my MacBook Pro, both of which support USB 2.0. But I'm forced back on the agonizingly slow USB 1 connection on my older PowerMac G4.

The main reason I selected this drive over other portables was for Firewire. And I'm not the only one who has reported sudden Firewire failures. So if you're considering the Studio version of this drive because it supports both USB and Firewire, look elsewhere.
