"It works until it doesn't. Then you're up the creek." 2009-08-06
By S. Rogers (California)
As 110 out of 613 people have noted so far (over 1 in 6), this useless product WILL fail without any warning, cause or notice. Whatever positive things can be said about it (it's small, it started out performing, it doesn't make much noise, it has lots of capacity) pale in comparison to the HUGE fault that it's a defective piece of crud. This external hard drive was meant to be a backup for my regular computer, which is far older. And yet this turd failed within a short time, while my computer plugs steadily on. It will cost hundreds to thousands of dollars to (attempt to) retrieve the data on this lemon. Since the main goal of an additional hard drive is to store and access data, this lump of crap should get a zero, not even a "1". Various repair facilities have told me "all hard drives fail at some point", and nothing lasts forever. All the same, with the care given, it should have lasted FAR longer. This turkey was kept on a desk, there was no motion, let alone droppage, no abuse, nothing put on top or near it to block vents or in any other way to interfere with it. I wish I could suggest another specific product, but I don't have enough experience with other brands like Seagate or Iomega, who along with W.D. ("Western Digital"=W.D.="Wretched Disappointment") appear to be the big three hard drive makers, to do that. Good luck with something else, but avoid this monster.

"Waste of Money, Sad to Say" 2009-08-06
By C. Fiehn (New York, NY)
I bought this product on February 19th. A week ago today (August 7th), the device was officially broken. I called technical support at Western Digital and they were kind enough to confirm that my back up drive, the drive that contains back up files for all my important documents, has malfunctioned and the data is lost. Ordinarily, that would not be a total disaster, however, since my Dell laptop has had hardware trouble, I have no choice now but to pay hundreds (perhaps thousands) of dollars to recover my data. I've learned my lesson this time. I'm using online storage from now on.

Poor customer service at Western Digital, by the way. Very unhelpful.

"Lot's of storage for the price!" 2009-08-06

Received this drive in a few days, works perfect so far. Can't beat the price for 640GB of storage. I'm very satisfied so far. Let's see how long it last.

 "Dead on Arrival" 2009-08-06

Unit won't power up. Judging from reviews and hearsay, these seem to have a high failure rate. Who's in charge of quality control? The one star is for being pretty, but I don't need an $80 bookend, so it's going back.

"Fairly happy with this drive" 2009-07-28
By Tracy Marks (Arlington, MA USA)
I have been fairly happy with this drive, which I bought when it first came out to backup my thousands of photoshopped photos (now I need even more space!). I bought it because of the good reviews it received, because it had drag and drop and has backup utilities which don't encode files in another format. However the utilities are quite limited. Also, the drive does get very hot. However I use it to back up files every day and it's been completely reliable.
