Works great with Apple Time Machine after reformatting. Great value for its size. Highly recommended.

 "Quiet backup drive" 2009-08-06
By Glenn R. Howes (Nashua, NH)
I bought this for my wife's Mac Mini running Windows Vista, and it has acted as would like: quietly, which was my major need for a drive which will spend most of its time idling waiting for the next backup. Also, it has a FireWire 400 port making it a step above the typical USB 2.0 only external drives which dominate the low end of the market. Of course, newer Macs come with FireWire 800, but that does not affect my needs.

I also like the slow, dim pulsing of its idle indicator. Too many modern external drive manufacturers have gone crazy with the blinding blue LEDs but not this one.

 "Dish Network extender" 2009-05-30

I bought this to work with my Dish DVR, it is silent, there is a light on the front that says it is working, it looks right, has worked flawlessly so far, and is not hot. If I need one I will by another. ron

"Western Digital My Home Edition 750 GD" 2009-05-12
By Kenneth Norris
Hands down this unit reads all USB,Firewire, and the new eSATA speeds up to 3GB. This Western Digital is the only backup unit to have, and I'm have had many different brands of drives in the past and they have all ended in the trash can. This is the one to buy......

 "Crashed my system" 2009-04-21
By Joan Lump (Colorado USA)
I bought this to use on a 3-port Firewire card, mostly for video transfers from a camcorder connected to another port on the same card. It replaced a smaller Firewire disk on the same card/port. That means I need it to work with other devices connected, and to be able to mount and dismount it because it doesn't need to be powered on all the time. It wouldn't do that.

The WD disk worked by itself, and is notably quiet. Note that it automatically installs software that you might not want (in particular, the backup and mirroring products are trial versions only).

The problem I had was in trying to get other Firewire devices on other ports on the same card to work. The WD disk would repeately hang the system whenever I tried to start another device. Eventually the WD disk itself wasn't recognized and I had to do a hard shutdown of everything to get it recognized. Needless to say, when I did get it recognized I immediately erased all data, obtained a return authorization from Amazon, and sent it back. All of this took about a day and a half of trying new things and rebooting.

I don't know whether the problem was with this drive, all WD Firewire drives, or my system. But I did contact WD support (they weren't able to offer any suggestions) and my system does work properly with other manufacturers' devices connected through Firewire, so sending it back was the only reasonable alternative.
