"Huge, quick, quiet drive, but a little hot" 2009-08-05
By M. Falcon (Fresno, CA USA)
The MyBook Studio Edition 750gb is a heck of a drive. More storage than I (literally) know what to do with. It's quiet, and really fast, with plenty of connection options. USB 2.0, the old standby, is quite fast; eSATA, an emerging standard for external drives at internal hard drive speeds; and FireWire 800, a rather obscure but welcome standard that makes USB 2.0 seem "slow" by comparison. You should, of course, use the fastest interface your computer supports (eSATA, then Firewire, then USB if nothing else is available).

It's a very quiet drive, almost entirely inaudible. Inside the case is a Western Digital GreenPower 750gb SATA II hard drive, which is the quietest, most efficient hard drive WD has to offer. It runs on a small "wall wart" power adapter at 12Vdc.

My only concern with this drive is that it gets quite warm on top after hours of continuous use (e.g. slowly reading video data as it encodes). I've placed mine on a laptop cooling pad, which draws some moving air through the case (which has many cooling holes, but apparently not quite enough) and keeps it ice cool. Cooling has always been a concern with Western Digital external drives, and they seem to have never fixed that design flaw (although I think some MyBook models had fans?). There's also a slight concern regarding the LED patterns: after the drive is idle, it should enter a "sleep" mode, where the indicator LED starts to pulse slowly. On mine, it does that for a while before it stops pulsing and stays on full brightness for no good reason. Not sure what it's indicating, but in a dark room (like a bedroom) it can get almost distracting. The LED lightshow while it's in operation is quite entertaining, and the white LEDs are beautiful against the silver case finish.

Overall I'd say it's a very, very good hard drive for someone with hungry storage needs. It can store over a hundred full DVDs or almost 175 4.7gb DVDs. It also works great as a backup drive to be used in conjunction with image-based backup solutions like Ghost or True Image.

"Western Digital 750 Gb Studio edition" 2009-05-30

This product was easy to to install & setup. The only distraction was having to find & install the recommended upgrade which was extensive & time consuming. Since installation, the device has performed as advertised.

 "Beware of the FireWire" 2009-05-01
By Jethro Tuller (Detroit, MI)
Using USB, this seems to work fine and does what it claims. However the FireWire 800/400 connection to a PC is the pits. Windows would not boot with the FireWire connected. Connecting the device after Windows is up will work every other time, but Windows still will not boot with it connected.

Good price, decent looking, but loud. Unit sometimes requires plugging/unplugging power to get it to boot. Also, sometimes it will not show up on the desktop... this happens randomly.

...am probably going to return it.

 "Get the Firmware Upgrade" 2009-02-16
By immersus (venice)

Be sure to go to Western Digital website and get the Firmware update and Drive Manager. After installing those this drive should be stable. Like other reviewers I was having hangs especially with iTunes. Also it seems that some widgets may have been creating conflicts. But that doesn't happen after the updates.

This product is beautiful! It matches the aluminum of the iMac and MacBooks. It's fast: with FW800 it achieves real transfer rates greater than 56 MB/s. (eSATA rates would be higher, probably 110 MB/s.) Also it's quiet, cool and comes formatted in HFS+ with all necessary cables.
