"Do Not Buy This If Your Data is IMPORTANT!" 2009-08-27
By Marlon (Los Angeles, CA USA)
Our company purchased 12 of these units and over half of them have crashed already, or have lost one of the two drives, or have lost a power supply. These units are crap! We have lost much data! Do not use this if you are planning on keeping data "Safe". Fine for quick transfers on non-critical data. Use at your own risk! The units worked fine for about three months.

 "Never Again" 2009-03-16
By Nelson (Indiana)
I've been using numerous Western Digital drives for the past 2 years and in fact I have 2 of these 1TB drives that I've been using for video editing on a Mac.

My main gripes are:

The drive seems to spin down in like 30 seconds after not being accessed. Normally this would not be (as much) of a problem for other types of use, but it's absolutely unacceptable for video editing.

The cooling fans are super-loud and seem to blow super-hard at odd times (not necessarily when they're working hard).

I have to do all kinds of workarounds to get the drive to mount.

I cannot chain more than 2 of these drives together and WD tells me I might have an issue with my computer motherboard which is BS.

I'm not buying these drives anymore.

 "Do NOT Buy!" 2009-01-22
By Ryan (Tempe, AZ)
Purchased 2 WD my book pro ediition 2's about a year ago for size and warranty. I am a professional photographer and need lots of storage for images and had used smaller Western Digital hard drives in the past and worked fine. Within the first few months of using one of the 1TB WD my book pro edition 2 hard drives, it no longer would be recognized on any of my computers (I use Mac). Thank goodness I had everything on that drive backed up (always back up your stuff)!

Got ahold of WD and sent the hard drive in. Couple weeks later the hard drive was sent back. In that time I opened up the other WD my book pro edition 2 I had and attempted to use it. It recognizes, but rather than a full terabyte, it only recognizes one of the drives at about 460gb. I have not yet checked to see if the first hard drive they sent back to me is fixed.

Dealing with WD in an attempt to get this fixed and hopefully get 2 different models of their 1TB hard drives as I can no longer trust the WD 1TB my book pro edition II from my multiple bad experiences and from what I have read from others reviews all over the web and in computer forums.

My recommendation... DO NOT BUY! Wish I could rate this product less than 1 star. Spend your money on a different hard drive and possibly a different hard drive maker.

"Why are you crying about a fan?" 2008-12-03
By Damon B. Herota-thomas (Florida)
The reviews for this are based on a product that works and this product does just that.

Open up the side of your computer and turn it on, WHOO guess what? You hear a fan that is rather loud. This is an EXTERNAL drive, meant to be tucked away in an area - but an area it can vent the heat out of. You are running 2 500 gig drives in an area 1/4th the size of your PC case and they are side by side - they NEED AIR.

Buying a similar product that does a raid type configuration (2 drives mirroring one another) that doesn't have a large fan on it is going to cause not 1 but BOTH drives to fail. Then you will be crying about the 2500.00 its going to cost to due data recovery.

My point here is (giving it one star) because your dog gets scared you turn it on is rather sad. The product is great, it works flawlessly, and does its job. I own 3 of these, along with 2 other mybook drives... (The smaller ones are super quiet) and to be honest I don't find the big ones to be that loud unless moving DATA back and fourth. It's made to be a back up drive, not as a main drive for your PC - hence the one thats IN YOUR MACHINE.

Get real!

"WDC warranty is a scam" 2008-10-30
By Tero Paananen
I own two Western Digital My Book drives, one 500GB drive, and this 1TB drive.

I'm mostly happy with the product itself. The fan is loud, but I have a laptop that's even louder, so that's not really a problem for me.

My products have a total number of 3 hard drives in them; one 500GB HD on the 500GB version, and two 500GB ones in this one. I know hard drives aren't forever, but I do expect them to last longer than 12 months, which is exactly the time it took for two of the three hard drives to get bad. That was annoying, but not really a disaster, nor would it have made me avoid WDC products in the future.

However, what did make me avoid all and every WDC product from now on was the warranty scam by WDC. You see, these products supposedly come with a three-year warranty. You're supposed to be able to replace broken products with new products within 36 months of purchase. It doesn't really work that way.

When I called WDC about my broken hard drives, they claimed they were out of warranty because they weren't sold in the US. They were bought online with a BIG (not Amazon) retailer within the US, paid by a credit card issued by a US bank and shipped to my home in US. I called them about half a dozen times before finally telling myself this simply isn't worth it.

I will never buy another WDC product again. Thankfully there are plenty of competing products these days.
