As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation.

- IntelliPower: A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed- IntelliSeek: Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.
- IntelliPark: Delivers lower power consumption by automatically unloading the heads during idle to reduce aerodynamic drag.
- Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR), to achieve even greater areal density.
- StableTrac: The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize

The drive is really silent and cool, i have this baby since july 2008 and for storage is a blessing. Not recommended for people need fast I/O (video processing for example. I want to build a NAS server and this drives were my 1st thought, just noticed that WD have new drives, Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS, those drives are 7200rpm with 32mb cache and still green.
But this model work like a charm.

Bought two of these drives to use in an HP Server EX485. Put these in as a RAID in my Vista PC while waiting for the server; copied over 200GB of photos and music to them, worked with no problem. Moved them one at a time into the HP EX485 server, still works with no problem, runs cool and quiet.

Just a great drive. Easy to install. Be sure to use a jumper for older SATA controls.

Works well as XP boot disk. Night and day difference in quiet operation compared to old WD drive. No power cord supplied! SATA has different power connectors than IDE and no adapter is provided so I couldn't use it right out of the box.
Good value!

I installed this in a Network Media Tank HDX-1000, which is a fanless media server that outputs (upscaled or full HD) to 1080P via HDMI or Component. The fanless part worried me, so I looked for a slower drive that would run cool. Well turns out this is the PERFECT drive for this situation. My NMT never reached 90°F because this drive never even came close to getting hot! It stays as slow as possible, therefore staying cooler, while never skipping or causing jittery video.
It's also fairly quite though if I have it in front of a tv, you can hear it accessing every few seconds during quiet scenes, if it's next to or behind, I can't hear it. Also, in a cabinet it's almost silent. You can definitely hear it wind up when it first starts if you have it out in the open (in a drive case). It's also great how it winds down whenever possible.
I should point out since I've seen some confusion on other boards even in the description, this is a 5400 TO 7200RPM drive. It will adjust to the lowest speed necessary, but if the lowest happens to be 7200RPMs, you got it!
7200RPM's! 7200RPM's! 7200RPM's! 7200RPM's! 7200RPM's! 7200RPM's! 7200RPM's! 7200RPM's!
