 "Works Well" 2009-02-08

I bought this internal hard drive to stretch the life of my PC for awhile. I installed it as a 'slave' and moved all my digital photos (thousands of them) onto it. That freed-up a lot of space on my 'master' hard drive and will keep it from getting overloaded. As an aside, I should note that I backup all the info on both internal hard drives with an Iomega external drive. This is far, far more convenient than what I used to do; that is, backup on CD's or DVD's. This Western Digital drive works just like it should once I got it properly installed and configured. It should be noted that the drive came without any separate instructions on how to install it. Fortunately there is a paper label glued to the case that instructs how to install it as a slave or as a master. The PC's instructions for the motherboard should also be read and followed to ensure a correct installation. Even though I got it correctly installed, I needed help from my more knowledgeable computer friend to map this drive correctly. Neither Western Digital nor any of the other paperwork for my PC provided any help to accomplish that. My friend helped me re-arrange my PC's drive letters so that the new drive became my D: drive and the master remained my C: drive. As I understand it, this is pretty much a requirement, otherwise things can get really messed-up. So this drive will work great if it is installed and configured correctly. I gave this product 4 stars, not 5, because of the lack of decent written instructions.

I have had a WD Hard Drive for over 6 years and no single issue, I am looking another one to replace the existing one which after a lot of use began to fail, but still kept my data so I can recover my files.

BTW, Quantum used to be a great quality in the old times...

A 7200rpm 80G disk with 8MB cache for $50 dollars... It is working perfectly as a RAID component at this very moment, complimenting another WD 80G disk I have had for several years now. The disk is quiet, but one ought be able to achieve higher data transfer rates with SCSI or SATA. RAID 0, however, compensates for the slower data transfer rate, if any one might be interested. I have read negative reviews about WD disks, and yet have had no such negative experience, nor have I had any direct dealings with WD customer service. Always backup your data. I will say about this in comparison with other disks I have used that it does have very straightforward jumper settings, unlike some cryptic old quantum disks or IBM deskstars.
