 "Mac Compatible" 2009-07-28
By Ioana624 (Memphis, TN, USA)
Hi,

I have purchased this Western Digital 2 weeks ago. I wanted to use it for both Mac and pc, so I had to format and partition the hard drive according to the specific formats. For Mac I used Extended Journaled case-sensitive (backing up using Time Machine), and for pc I chose FAT. Now it works perfect on both computers. I must mention that the Mac partition (including all the files) cannot be seen on the pc, so I didn't have to protect it in any way. The price was good at that time, and the capacity is really a big plus. I can hardly sense it running, and the speed is quite awesome. I am very happy with this product.

"Good product, software NOT easy to use" 2009-07-27
By Sophie (New York)
My Dad and I both bought this product (separately) after reading the Amazon reviews on this and the Iomega. The drive itself is fine but it comes with no instructions as to how to use the software. Now usually that means its all a bit of a no-brainer, but not in this case. I still can't get the software to run and therefore am backing up via Norton (or you can do a copy and paste job). Dad got the software to run (each time you want to run the backup you proceed as if you are going to reinstall the software) but was disappointed with the speed and cumbersome process. Surely it can be better than this?

Plugs straight in to work,c/w indicator light, works faultlessly, was inadvertently dropped one time! The USB cord is a whole 14 inches long! Size of HD about that of a hand held calculator. It would not do well as a traveling HD without a lot of padding. It sits in its box around here when not in use. This item we wanted as a scratch disc for Aperture program -all our computing is mac- based. Transferring the library of 30 gigs or so, maybe 15 minutes. The drive comes configured for windows but to reformat to mac is simplicity itself.

"Little HD that works just fine on Toshiba P35 laptop" 2009-07-29
By S. JOHNSON (California)
After getting a Toshiba Satellite P35 for free. I went about fixing it's known issues. Then I tackled the speed with more RAM and a bigger faster HD. The original HD was 100GB 4200RPM. By going to a 250GB 5400RPM I actually significantly increase the R/W speeds of the laptop. The increased rotation rate is nice but hardly the cause for the biggest gain. Because each HD had the same number of platters the distance to search for a file on the new HD is about 2.5 times less distance than the original. That, the 8MB, and the increased RPM's make this HD over 2X's faster than the old one. =) Making old slow computers run fast again... Just so long as you stay away from Vista that is. Actually if you want to see some real speed load Umbuntu and it's virus free to boot. I do all my web surfing and banking on a locked down Umbuntu machine and I have never felt safer.

Fun Fact: Here is our Government at work. Windows 7 comes on Oct 22 09 and the army has just decided to convert everything to Vista - which has major problems. This of course means the army will purchasing new computers to run the bloated OS. Of course their is no guarantee that Windows 7 will not have issues but the 2nd OS in a series for MS is usualy better.

Windows 95 Sucks

Windows 98 OK

Windows ME Sucks

Windows XP OK

Windows Vista Sucks

Windows 7 ?

Save yourself the headache and learn about Umbuntu.

 "AMAZING upgrade!" 2009-07-25
By Eduardo Nietzsche (Houston)
PROs:

1. Much quieter than my OEM Hitachi HDD, which was constantly clicking.

2. Much faster...wow!

3. Much cooler-running! My battery now runs longer, and the laptop itself doesn't get so hot anymore.

4. Four times the storage as the OEM drive.

Most dramatic improvement I've ever made to this laptop, as good if not better than going from 2 x 256MB RAM to 1 x 256MB + 1 x 1GB! My nearly 5 year old Toshiba Tecra S1 now boots up and runs as quickly as my friend's one year old new dual-core laptop!

CON: [...] would buy me a much bigger and even faster (7200rpm not 5400rpm) SATA drive, sigh...but it's all about supply and demand isn't it? Not too many laptops around with this ATA-6 (PATA) drive interface anymore.

Installation was painless...less than 10 minutes. Reloading and updating Windows XP took about 3 hours, and doing the same with all my other software and drivers took an additional 3 hours. But worth it, because I wanted to start all over from a totally clean drive, that's why I didn't get one of those Apricorn HDD-mirroring kits.

Alas, I have no comments about this drive's performance since I was forced to return it. Thankfully, the Amazon.com folks are EZ returns...that's why I try to order from Amazon as often as possible.

I purchased this hard drive for a five year old Toshiba laptop running Windows XP. Installation was a snap and I've used it daily for the past month with no problems. This is the 80GB version (WD800BEVE 5400 RPM). It replaced a 60GB 4500 RPM that finally died. If you have an older laptop with an EIDE connection and you need to get some more life out of it, give this one a try. I am pleased and would buy it again.

"Largest of the older technology ATA100 drives" 2009-07-04
By William Tell (Northern CA.)
It was getting increasingly difficult to find large capacity ATA100 hard drives. This 5400rpm 320GB was the largest I was able to find. It runs cooler than the 7200rpm, 100GB Hitachi drive, that it replaced. (a definite plus in my laptop!).The difference in speed is not noticeable in most tasks, and the drive runs almost silently. Since it hasn't failed in the 4 weeks I've owned it, I can say that, to this point, the drive does what it was designed to do, and does it well.

"WD Caviar Blue 500 GB HDD" 2009-07-29
By jcvox93 (Long Island, New York, USA)
Great drive, came in great packaging and in an anti static bag to keep it safe. Drive performance over all is pretty good, it doesnt run that hot, but it will get hot with restricted airflow so make sure your case has nice airflow. I get a peak of 150 MB/s read on this drive, with the average around 120 MB/s. Power on hours is about 600, so this drive is pretty new but the SMART status shows good numbers so far. This looks like a very reliable drive, better then some Seagates that ive used in the past. I would recommend this drive, its got great performance and a great price point.

Just got this in the mail. Lickety split as well. I was pleasantly suprised, after reading other reviews, that it came packaged quite securely in a pair of shock-absorbing endcaps. But as others have mentioned, this OEM drive comes with nothing! Nothing! The drive and that's it. I am ok with it, I know what is what, but its something to be sure to be aware of. Looking forward to getting it up and running soon. Will update with performance in the future.

"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" 2009-07-15
By John Morelli
First, I will start with the Bad, so that the Good and the Ugly will have the necessary background. The Bad is that within a few months, this hard drive failed. I used the WD utility to check it and the utility could not complete and report. I am no expert, but I think the controller on this drive was bad.

The Good, is that WD replaced the drive with the only cost to me the postage of returning the bad drive (although I could argue that they should have sent a postage paid return container, I find their approach acceptable). There was little wait time on the technical support line (<5 min) and there was little hassle in requesting an RMA#. The most difficult part of the return was determining whether to use their normal return, where I send the bad drive back first, or their advanced return, where they take my credit card number, send out a drive and I send the bad drive back within 30 days to ensure my credit card is not charged. I went with the advanced return to get the working drive quicker. The process was flawless.

The Ugly is that while I backed up my most important data and did not lose any of these files, I still lost about 250Mb of data that while not important, I would really rather not lose. In general, I count on a drive lasting at least three years. After that, I get really fanatical about backing up everything. By then, that capacity drive is dirt cheap and buying a duplicate/replacement is easily affordable. Sure, accidents can happen anytime, so I back everything up that is important all the time, but to have a drive last just a few months seems a little ridiculus.

WD was my manufacturer of choice for several years. I think their tech support is outstanding; however, this is the second WD drive I have had that had problems resulting in the loss of data. I am going to be looking a little more critically at my next purchases before I dive into another WD drive.

By Peter (Atlanta, GA)
The product arrived when expected. It was well packaged and in good condition. I used it to replace an existing hard drive that had run out of space. This meant I needed to get an IDE ribbon connector to connect the two hard drives to the controller. The hardest part of the installation was rigging a way to hold both hard drives in the computer temporarily which was not very difficult. I did not use the software that came with the new HD but elected to use a quick transfer software instead. The installation and transfer of all information from the old HD to the new went very well and the WD 500GB HD is has been working well for about a month now.

 "Hard drive review" 2009-05-03
By Evelio Sardinas
There were no problems with hard drive or JR Electronics. However, there was a huge problem with UPS as they completely screwed up the delivery. UPS compounded the problem by telling me that the driver would come to my house to let me know where he had left the package. After a week of this nonsense I had to wait another three weeks for their "investigation" to be completed before another hard drive was sent. A word of caution, require a signature. This way they cannot say the package was delivered when in fact it was not.

"1TB of Raging, Blinding Speed! Absolutely Terrible Packing 50% of the Time Though..." 2009-07-27
By Wavey Davey (Southern CA, USA)
I have been waiting to review my six (6) WD Black 1TB 32MB Cache SATA 2 HD's because I wanted to establish a track record with them, a baseline, since I am using them in two distinctly different RAID mediums. In any case, the SATA HD's are working fantastic in RAID 5 and RAID 0 for me and my newest PC build. Let me digress a little and I'll rate the HD's after I tell you how I am using them.

I have four (4) in a FirmTek SeriTek 2eEN4 4-Bay HotSwap RAID Enclosure as my primary "write-to" HD system for video and sound projects, in a RAID 5, so total space available in RAID 5 is 3TB. A RAID 5 uses speed and redundancy so it's an ideal medium for film or audio, as it "saves" one HD as a "spare drive" in the array, just in case of a single HD failure, and will replace that failed drive with the "saved" drive instantly so that you never lose data, or hardly ever. You'd have to have 2 HD's out of the 3 fail to lose data with RAID 5, at least in theory this is the case.

The RAID 5 is connected to an Areca 1680IX-8 SAS to eSATA/SATA Hardware RAID Controller in the PC, and it's got a rudimentary installation of Vista 64-bit Ultimate on it to make it bootable, also. That's correct, I can boot the PC externally using the RAID 5 if necessary, and I do when I am building a film project from scratch if you must know the application's benefits. The RAID 5 writes at more than 405MB/sec, and reads at more than 430MB/sec with an empty volume to give you some perspective on "Hardware RAID" versus software, or system-bus RAID on an internal volume, so there is quite a benefit with the Areca 1680IX-8 controller in place.

The second use for my WD Black SATA 2 HD's is as the boot system for the PC 90% of the time, as I have two (2) of the HD's mounted internally in the PC, still pushed by the Areca controller for hardware RAID 0 inside the case also. I have all of my main applications like Photoshop CS3, Illustrator 11, etc+ my web browser, Outlook, Mail, on this HD system, as it suffices to drive the PC most of the time, but for when I use the external RAID 5 and am involved in a film project. The 2TB RAID 0 (c.1.8TB formatted) gets your attention right away, as it's much faster than a system bus RAID 0 could ever be with the hardware controller in charge: HD Tune Pro says that empty, it writes at more than 200/sec and reads at more than 210MB/sec, which is 50% faster than a WD Raptor 10K drive, so two of the Black SATA 2 HD's in RAID 0 is another surprise fast package using the Areca 1680IX-8 controller!

The internal RAID 0 launches the OS and the applications, even with Vista's stodgy factors entering the mix, in less than 1 minute! Yes, it's true, it IS faster than sin on the Bible. It "whirrs" a little when it's seeking and searching for data, and a little more during writes, but it's not unpleasant at all considering how fast it's going about its business. These WD Black SATA 2 HD's are just amazing things with 32MB Cache x 2 on board, for 64MB cache in a RAID 0, so things happen very, very fast between the logistics of the HD's and the controller doing their work.

I am constantly amazed at the speed of the RAID 0 for just being two (2) HD's, but again, it's the hardware RAID that does the job, and there is no substitute for it of you want ultimate performance in your PC system. Let's see, what are some general comments about these SATA 2 HD's that makes sense to the layman...OK, here goes:

1) As mentioned above, the 32MB/64MB (2 x HD's in RAID 0) Cache really makes for a fast ride for any data writing or reading, and seek/access time is approximately 10.4m/s (milliseconds), with a Burst Rate of 410+MB/sec, according to HD Tune Pro's Benchmarks, so hardware RAID is virtually off-scale for a 2HD SATA 2 array of any sort with RAID 0

2) Running the File Benchmark with a 64MB file goes off-scale completely with HD Tune Pro, yielding almost 1500MB/sec write speed, and 1250MB/sec read speed, so you have to use a larger file size of 512MB to get any real world performance measurement done, and that gives us up to 200MB/sec read speed, and more than 350MB/sec write speed, very commendable stats

3) I don't have anything but subjective RAID usage to give up to the nice people at Amazon.com, but I would expect nominal 90MB/sec+ read and write speed in a single volume setup with these WD Black SATA 2 HD's, as they are just about 20% less speedy than a 10K RPM Raptor HD in the 300GB capacity (I have one of those in the PC for comparison), so you're not giving up much in the way of performance with a normal system bus setup with the WD Black SATA 2 HD's

The most obvious benefit from the Black series SATA 2 WD HD's is Enterprise Status, which means 5-year warranty service should anything ever go wrong with one, and that gives me confidence in the HD's aplenty! They are rated at 1,000,000 hours MTBF (mean time before failure), only topped by the Raptor 2's 1.25M MTBF rating in the spectrum of WD HD's available. These SATA HD's are not the low energy draw HD's like the GP SATA 2 drives are, and I'd suggest you go with GP HD's if you want to worry about economy and watts per HD...these guys are power hungry HD's and will take their measure of watts in a system, all they can get in fact, up to 14W-15W per HD at peak write/read speeds.

In closing, at less than $95 shipped per 1TB SATA 2 HD these things are the bargain of the year at Amazon.com, and I'd suggest perhaps that they are the most underpriced HD's for sale here. Regarding shipping, I am always amazed at the inconsistency of Amazon.com shipping when it comes to HD packaging. WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO LEARN? You have to be consistent, pack each HD in its own HD-specific box, with foam anti-static cushions, wrapped up in an individual anti-static casing, or you just don't belong in the business of shipping HD's! It's just about that simple to me, and I have received 3 out of 4 HD's packaged correctly, then got two more and they were packed in air bladders in a box, semi-loose, and subject to damage of all sorts.

Good GRIEF AMAZON.COM!!!! Can't you get it together and ship these things packaged correctly, all the time? There is no excuse for shipping these great HD's in crappy packing, there's just no sense in it...so get yourselves busy doing it right, ok? PLEASE?

"Works but packaging was horrendous" 2009-07-27

The drive was not secure in the shipping box; I could feel the drive sliding around before opening the box. When I opened the sealed antistatic bag, I noticed the moisture gel pack had broken because beads were falling out of the bag. The worst part of it was when I pulled the hard drive out of the bag and turned the drive upside down, a couple of beads came out of the drive. I had 2 choices at this time, send it back or install it and see if it works. I decided to take my chances and formatted the drive. The drive works fine and I'm using it as an external back-up drive in a USB enclosure. I read all the reviews beforehand so I knew what to expect when ordering the OEM drive. It has a 5 year warranty and it seems to work even though it got tossed around in shipping.

This is a great hard drive, with good speeds, size, noise and heat. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for some great storage. I actually used it to replace the system drive in my Mac G5, and it's great!

However I returned the drive shipped to me by Amazon because of the poor packaging, and spent an extra $20 to buy it a BestBuy so it would be in retail packaging. The extra money was worth it to me to ensure that it wasn't beat up in shipping. Amazon needs to change their shipping habits of sensitive items like hard drives and camera lenses to name a few.

**Buy this OEM Bulk hard drive from Amazon with caution!!**

Good luck!

I ordered this drive next day air cause I needed this for a friends setup (last minute request). Anyway, I received the drive late due to UPS shipping issues and honestly I was amazed the drive still works. It was shipped in a tiny box with only padding on the top the drive (so it can still move around the box). I tested the drive for a few hours and luckily everything passed.

I have a hp 551w pavilion that is over 7 years old and the 33gig drive was just filling up too fast now that I put lots of video on it. No problem installing this drive as a secondary drive and I copied everything from my original drive to a partition I made on this drive. The data lifeguard tools works great which comes with the drive. The drive came with screws and jumpers but no ide cable as stated in description. This is the 1st new hard drive I've purchased and the drive was easy to install and suprisingly quite compared to some maxtor 20 gig drives from 2000 which I have had hooked up as secondary drives in the past. My system don't seem any louder than it was before. The drive just has a faint buzz and that is it. Hardly noticable. For $59 and free shipping this can't be beat in my opinion.

Had no problem installing - came with all the parts that I needed, although if you are installing into a computer that you are building yourself, you will need an IDE cable.

 "WD3200 EIDE Hard Drive" 2009-07-08

I replaced my 40 gig C: drive using the software that came with the drive. I just pulled my back-up drive, installed the new drive as a slave, used the supplied software to make the new drive the boot drive (took about 90 minutes to copy everything), installed the new drive in the C: drive position, replaced my back-up drive, and was done. All very easy.

 "Half Impressed" 2009-06-01
By Christopher Houle
Although this works well, I followed the directions while installing it and still came up with the same error. Then after it was installed and I went to format the drive, it had issues accepting the Operating System. I still get a disk read error when I start up and have to go to my bios in order to access my actual account. Otherwise this is quiet, and runs well.

"Great bang for the buck" 2009-05-17
By Robert Lacivita
I purchased this HDD to salvage my wife's 5-year old Dell. Easy to install, using the WD set up software, the drive is quite and fast compared to the 80GB 5400 RPM Maxtor that took a dump on me. Of course wasn't crazy about spending 3-days reinstalling all the software and settings. Highly recommended and a great value from Amazon; Amazon Rocks!
