"Very good but a suffers from a small nuisance" 2009-07-27
By Brian Lemanski (New York, USA)
Let me state off the bat that I am using a Macbook Pro

v 10.5.7.

A quick look:

Justifications for 4 stars

Pros:

Excellent hard drive capacity (cant complain with almost 2Tb [about 1.8 usable] at your disposal)

I love how the exterior matches with my laptop - seamless aesthetics make it a nice touch

Excellent connections with USB, Firewire 400 & 800, and e-sata.

Fairly fast data transfer rates (with Firewire 800) - average time to transfer about 1gb is about 4-6 min

Safe eject - the drive powers down automatically upon device ejection

Visual representation of hard drive useage

Cons:

The hard drive sometimes is not recognized by OSX (i.e. it doesn't appear in finder or anything)

when the harddrive is plugged into its power supply first and then plugged into the laptop which is suprisingly more

annoying than it would seem.

Runs slightly hot

Other notes:

Hard drive was difficult to format using disk utility when I wanted to partition it into two sections (one HFS+ and one FAT for interoperability with windows) though that might be a problem with OSX

Overall - A good drive but the plugging problem is annoying enough to not warrant it 5 stars, especially

when its price after taxes is approaching 300$

 "Not Plug and Play" 2009-07-20
By Keith Sharp (LA)
I needed a quick 2T plug and play (like all my many other USB drives) and felt the SATA would be a nice feature for future use. WRONG!

1.A. First, I tried to install it on my @#$ Vista. Drive is not recognized upon plug in. The included CD failed to install the drivers/software for this honey after repeated tries, installs, uninstalls, reboots, etc. Would NOT run on my Vista.

1.B. It is NOT plug and play on Windows XP Pro either. The drive is not recognized w/o the CD. The wizard loads a bunch of promotional advertising programs (which I try to avoid) which then constantly pop up to entice you to try and buy.

2. Once all the software is loaded and the required computer restart is accomplished, the additional updates are downloaded, additional registrations required for program functionality is completed, it still doesn't behave like a plug and play USB drive.

3. Explorer recognizes the drive but fails to register the 2T storage capacity, also showing 688 MB already taken, apparently by the garbage programs I was forced to load and does not register ANY free space. However, I was able to transfer some test date, even though no drive free space was recognized by explorer.

4. Maybe the SATA is functional but I'm done. It's going back.

This drive comes with USB 2.0, Firewire, and esata capabilities (unfortunately no esata cable comes with it =/ )

It's super fast, It's quiet as heck, and it's huge storage.

If you plan on storing tons of video this is well worth the bucks if you hate waiting for transfers to finish.

Since it was a pain for me to find out how to get the firewire connection running I'll walkthrough getting it working with Windows XP.

Ensure you connect it via firewire and ensure that your 1394 Connection is enabled in the Control Panel\Network Connections.

Then open up Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer Management. Open the Storage Section on the left tab then select disk management. In the bottom right you will see the available disk drives. I can't remember for certain here, but i think I right clicked the big blue bar to the right of the drive not assigned a letter but labeled 1863.01 GB and created a new partition which let me format the disk and assign a letter to the drive. IMPORTANT!...Make sure if you use windows you at least Quick Format it to NTFS. Once the drive is formatted it should be viewable in your My Computer explorer window. A reboot may be required but I don't think it was for myself.

ENJOY!

"Working Well with Macbook Pro and MacBook" 2009-05-01
By G. Kuo
Acquired this drive to replace a poorly functioning Simpletech Pro Quad 2TB RAID. This WD drive is quiet, fast, and unlike the Simpletech drive, does not stutter when connected via firewire 800 and 400 to my Macs. Drive operates quietly and without surprise. However, there was a problem getting it to mount the first time under firewire connection. Connecting via USB and partitioning the drive once, awakened the drive and thereafter it awakens via firewire correctly. That one problem is the only reason it doesn't quite get five stars.

This drive is pricier than some other solutions, but its nearly silent operation, high speed, and cool operation despite 8 hours of continuous file transfers make me want to get obtain another one.
