Nice, minimalistic black design. Feels very solid!
I bought this drive to make a backup of another 1TB drive.
I found the performance to be great for this purpose and had no complaints about the time it takes to format or to copy over data.
The only complaint was that Windows 7 RC refused to acknowledge this drive as a backup source. I haven't tried any other 3rd party software or any other external drives to know if this is an issue with Win 7 or the drive.

IT IS A OLD Model. IT HAS BAD SECTORS. I SENT MY ELEMENT BACK TO WD. THEY SENT ME A UPto DATE NEW MYBOOK 1TB. IF YOU WANT IT (LIKE, I DID)GET IT, BUT YOU GOING TO SEND IT BACK TO AMAZON AND GET MONEY OR REPLACEMENT YOU COULD SEND IT TO WD AND GET MYBOOK 1TB (THERE IS SHIPPING COST). BUY IT U ARE GOING SEND IT BACK SOMEONE.

In the time i've been using the WD Elements external HD (almost one month) it hasn't given me any trouble. It is pretty silent and relatively fast when I am browsing my considerable music and movies collection.
I've been using it as it came, with a FAT32 filesystem, together with my Ubuntu Linux laptop. I don't have an eSATA port so I went with this drive that has a single USB 2.0 connection (although if I had one, I would have chosen otherwise).
I chose this one as I already have another WD external HD (a 320GB Passport) that has also worked well. This HD looks very solid and sturdy and it is much cheaper than its MyBook equivalent.
The actual size reported when mounted on my filesystem is 931.3 GB.

So far so good. It seems to be working just fine not like the omega that I am still tryin to get my stuff off of.

I researched the comparable products and read the reviews on this Western Digital Elements 1 TB USB 2.0. Both my systems are running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2. I was aware that the WD HD was formatted FAT32.
I unpacked the drive and was impressed with the sturdiness and convenient size. I started a backup of about 25 GB of data. It seemed slow, but I let it continue to run while I was called away on errands. Over six hours later, it was still running and finally errored out. There was data on the drive. I prepared to "scrub" it and requested an RMA from Amazon.
The scrub process reported data errors, so I thought I'd better reformat even after the scrub. The reformat (NTFS) went very quickly. I figured I had nothing to lose with trying another backup after the reformat. What a complete difference! The backup and drive performed as fast as my Seagate FreeAgent.
I researched the FAT32 and NTFS differences and find that I should have reformatted to NTFS right out of the box.
The drive is as fast as any I have experienced in the past. I can recommend this to anyone needing convenient extra hard disc backup space. And I recommend anyone running Windows XP to reformat to NTFS before using it.
