Whats there really to say? This is an external hard drive with a Terabyte of storage. For those uninformed that's One Trillion Bytes of information, or 1000 GB of data that can be stored in it. About the size of a 500 page paperback novel, roughly. Connects directly to the usb port of your machine, think of it as a really big flash drive, REALLY BIG. Mine came formatted for a MAC - but a quick format in device manager and I was able to have it working with a PC within seconds ( honestly I was too quick in purchasing and didn't read "the fine print", meaning the blatant "THIS IS FOR A MAC..."WARNING"...yeah, I know). If you don't understand how to do this a Google search of "format external hard drive" will give you answers ( too my problem). And that's it really, format for your system, if your hasty, like me, and enjoy more than enough file storage than you'll probably ever use. Oh...yeah...also comes with 2 fire-wire 800 ports for fast video transfer and eSata for even FASTER video transfer - more info here - [...]...

I purchased this hard drive to use as a network attached storage paired with my Airport Extreme Base Station. i use the usb port to connect to the AEBS and now i can access and store data wirelessly onto the WD harddrive. i think this is extremely convenient because i dont have to connect cables to my laptop in order to access my external hard drive. however, i was unable to use the Apple Time Machine application wirelessly as the AEBS does not support it. for this i must have a hardwire connection to the unit. considering that i only back up my laptop evry two weeks or so, its not that much of an inconvenience. i have not used the hard drive to store streaming video or anything like that requiring high read/write speeds so i cannot comment on that aspect of the unit. overall, the unit is sleek, stylish and most of all, very functional.

After reading all the reviews I went with this drive...smart choice! It installed so easily and quickly that I thought I was missing something! Make sure to download and install the new firmware update.(the unit will not check for updates; kind of annoying since the update came out in Jan/09 and isn't installed at delivery.) Other than that it's a great drive!

I bought this drive for running a referenced Aperture library connected to my 17" MacBook Pro. It has been suitably fast and responsive for my needs. Use Firewire 800, forget USB 2.0 exists.
The first thing I did was delete the Western Digital software. I did NOT install any drivers or applications, the drive works perfectly fine without them. A little research will show the "turbo" drivers supplied by WD provide negligible benefit. Besides I prefer systems stay lean.
I have had no problems with this drive. Some have mentioned it randomly not auto-booting. If I eject the drive and take my MBP mobile, when I dock again it does not appear. A simple logout/login will correct this. Or you could manually turn off/on the drive. I don't see this as a problem.
Awaking from sleep automatically wakes the drive instantly. Also it looks very nice, though I could do without the large LED strip.

I like products that work, and I've always loved Western Digital hard drives because I've never had issues with any of them. I have 2 in my Mac Pro and they run wonderfully. This MyBook just didn't work right from the moment I plugged it in. It mounted, I began to copy data and it decided to shut off. It wouldn't turn back on. Tried again and got it to turn on, it mounted and then decided to unmount itself. I haven't gotten it to come back to life.
I understand that products arrive DOA, but I've never seen a product "function" so bizarrely. The enclosure feels very cheap and fragile and the thing just didn't work properly. I tried the FW800, FW400, USB cables and tried different outlets to no avail. Sorry Western Digital, but this product doesn't live up to the quality I've experienced from you, I'm going to go crawling back to LaCie for my external hard drive needs.
